Dodgers Player Profile: Chad Billingsley

At the young age of 24, Chad Billingsley has become an integral part of the Los Angeles Dodgers. As a senior at Defiance High School in 2003, Billingsley pitched in 11 games and was 6-1 with a 1.49 ERA, striking out 113 and walking only 16 in 56.0 innings.

Billingsley was the first round pick, 24th overall, of the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 2003 Major League Baseball Draft and he had a signing bonus of $1,375,000. Billingsley was the number one prospect in the Dodgers organization prior to being recalled to the Major League roster in June 2006.

Billingsley made his Major League Baseball debut with the Dodgers on June 15, 2006, against the San Diego Padres at PETCO Park in San Diego , California . In his debut, Billingsley started and pitched for 5.1 innings and surrendered 6 hits and 2 runs while striking out three. He even knocked in two runs in his first official at-bat and his debut was considered a success as the Dodgers went on to beat the Padres 7-3. Billingsley remained in the starting rotation for the rest of the season, but in 2007 he started in the bullpen. He pitched well in relief and returned to the starting rotation on June 21st after Jason Schmidt went through a season ending surgery and was placed on the disabled list.

In 2008, Billingsley rose to prominence as one of the top pitchers in the National League while solidifying himself as the number one pitcher of the Dodgers. He finished the year with a 16-10 record and was 5th in the National League, and 9th in the Majors, with 201 strikeouts, and an ERA of 3.14 and a WHIP of 1.34 in 200.2 innings pitched. Billingsley also pitched his first career complete game shutout against the San Francisco Giants on July 30, 2008 when he allowed five hits and had eight stikeouts without allowing a single walk.

Billingsley also started for two postseason games for the Dodgers in October 2008. In his first postseason appearance, Billingsley pitched a strong 6 2/3 innings, and allowed just one run against the Chicago Cubs. The Dodgers won the game 10-3. However, his second start was less successful as he lasted only 2 1/3 innings and allowed 8 runs in an 8-5 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies in Game 2 of the National League Series Championship.

At the young age of 24 Chad Billingsley has an entire career ahead of him and has already proven himself to be an integral part of the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Reviving Baseball in the Inner Cities (RBI) program has always had the support of the Dodgers, since its inauguration in 1989. It’s a baseball program which provides academic help to those in need in the community. RBI honored the organization for their 50 years in Los Angeles at the 19th annual RBI Hall of Fame Dinner at the Globe Theatre at Universal Studios.

Furthermore, former Dodgers Bobby Castillo, Darryl Strawberry and Kenny Landreaux, made up the 2008 class of the RBI Hall of Fame and were inducted at the ceremony. Castillo and Landreaux, both members of the Dodgers’ 1981 World Championship team, are active members of the Dodger Legends Bureau. Strawberry played for Dodgers from 1991-93. In addition to this, RBI also saluted Chuck Essegian and Ron Cey as members of previous Dodger World Championship teams in 1959 and 1981.

The Dodgers was privileged to be recognized by RBI and will continue to support the said program.
