Hiroki Kuroda and the Dodgers

Hiroki Kuroda from Osaka, Japan, is a professional baseball player. The Los Angeles Dodgers have joined the pursuit of Japanese free-agent right-hander Hiroki Kuroda. Believing the cost of trading for Johan Santana to be very expensive in dollars and players, the team considers the 32-year-old Kuroda to be a sensible upgrade for the back end of the starting rotation, which unraveled last year. Otherwise, the Major League free-agent market is considered thin in starting pitching.

The team of Dodgers was already expressing concern about their depth in starting pitching even before the hiring of manager Joe Torre, who has repeatedly talked about his insatiable desire for pitching since he arrived. Torre, no doubt, has noticed that the team used eight pitchers by 2007 in the fourth- and fifth-starter spots in the rotation; Mark Hendrickson, Hong-Chih Kuo, Esteban Loaiza, Jason Schmidt, Eric Stults, Brett Tomko, David Wells and Randy Wolf. Combined, they went 22-38 with a 5.60 ERA. Wolf went 9-6 in the first half and missed the second half with shoulder surgery. Remove his stats from the group and the back end of the rotation was 13-32 with a 5.90 ERA. Ideally, Schmidt will return from major surgery and Loaiza will regain his healthy form, as they will be paid this year like starters. However, their uncertain health has management on the prowl for insurance.

Hiroki Kuroda has pitched 11 seasons for Hiroshima, where he was a teammate of current Dodgers closer Takashi Saito. Kuroda reportedly met with Saito and Dodgers officials last week in Tokyo, according to the Los Angeles Times. Kuroda is a true free agent and is not subject to the posting system. Among teams pursing Kuroda are Seattle, Arizona and Kansas City. The LA Dodgers blazed the Major League trail for Japanese pitchers in the free-agent era when they brought Hideo Nomo to Los Angeles in 1995. They enjoyed mixed success with Kazuhisa Ishii. It was announced on Tuesday by the team the signing of corner infielder Terry Tiffee to a non-roster contract with an invitation to Spring Training. Tiffee played parts of three seasons with the Twins and spent the 2007 season with Baltimore's Triple-A Norfolk affiliate. In addition, the club also is working toward an agreement on a similar contract with right-hander Brian Shackleford, who pitched briefly for Cincinnati in 2005 and 2006 and split the 2007 season between the Triple-A affiliates of Cincinnati and Tampa Bay. Furthermore, Catcher Chad Moeller, impressive in a September call-up but taken off the Major League roster, signed with Washington.

The LA Dodgers is indeed preparing for the upcoming season as they study the status of their players as well as acquire new ones that deserve to be called Dodger.
