A Great Time in Pasadena

The MLB clubs also takes part in different community activities and reach out projects and/or programs, and one of these clubs is the LA Dodgers. Everyone was excited as the event started. Everyone there was waiting for a speech from a baseball legend, a glimpse of this year’s Rose Queen, and kids waiting for Santa Claus.

The wrinkle to this year’s ceremony was that baseball Tommy Lasorda was around as well to ask Santa to light the tree, and to spread his usual goodwill. As the lights were dimmed, not a creature was stirring until a little boy shot his hand toward the upper balcony with finger pointed high and yelled at the top of his lungs, “There's Santa!” And with that surprising cue, the lights were pointed at Santa Claus, the bells were ringing and hands were clapping as Santa pointed to the tree. The lights that wrapped around the tree that was decorated with stars and balls of red and gold, started to flicker. The crowd’s enthusiasm was raised as well, and in less time than it takes for a child to tear open a present, the tree was glowing. Simultaneously the 70-voice Pasadena Tabernacle Children’s Choir began a medley of carols. “When that tree went on, the true spirit of Christmas came out,” Tommy Lasorda said. “I am so impressed with the amount of toys that are donated, and by all the volunteers from the Pasadena Jaycees who pass them out. When you can give just one toy to a child who wouldn't usually get one, it just puts a smile on their face and you realize what Christmas is really about.”

Furthermore, the Charles Cherniss Tounrament of Toys was started by former Pasadena Star-News editor Chuck Cherniss. Many years ago, a motorcycle gang would distribute presents around Arroyo Seco, but at one point, their permit was not renewed by the city. Cherniss then stepped in and renewed the permits in his own name and carried on the tradition. The toys that are collected go to more than 6,000 underprivileged kids from the San Gabriel Valley. Once the toys are collected the Pasadena Jaycees, Pasadena's preeminent young professional organization, routes out the distribution maps and delivers the toys. “I am so touched to be a part of this,” Dusty Gibbs said, the 89th Rose Queen. “My little brother is so excited to buy a toy and donate it to the toy drive. Giving back to those who aren’t as fortunate is part of our identity as a city,” Dusty Gibbs said. “It's part of who we are, and I am proud to be a part of it.”

It was another unforgettable event and every one enjoyed it. The Los Angeles Dodgers will continue to take part in this kind of events and activities. Let us wait for the great performances of LA Dodgers next season!
