A Time to Reach Out
The clubs of Major League Baseball are not just born to play baseball but to somehow make a change to the lives of others as well. LA Dodgers was one of these teams who reached out and made themselves helpful and caring to others.
Not all families are fortunate they can’t afford to have all the turkey and gravy, mashed potatoes and stuffing, candied yams and cranberries for a Thanksgiving dinner.
The Dodgers Dream Foundation partnered with Ralphs/Food 4 Less, on Tuesday night, made sure that these families could enjoy the Thanksgiving holiday. The two cooperated with each other to be able to reach out to families for them to celebrate Thanksgiving. As cars lined up in the parking lot at Dodger Stadium, turkeys and all the fixings of a traditional Thanksgiving dinner were given out to 600 pre-selected families who are in need. These families were also lucky as they pulled up to Dodger Stadium to find Hall of Fame manager Tommy Lasorda spreading holiday cheer by passing the turkeys out. On hand to help Lasorda were Los Angeles city council members Eric Garcetti, First Council District, 13th Council District, Ed P. Reyes, and California State Assembly member Kevin de Leon, as well as Dodger legends “Sweet” Lou Johnson and Bobby Castillo. Also representing the LA Dodgers was Howard Sunkin, senior vice president of public affairs. “Anytime you have a chance to help someone you have to do it,” Tommy Lasorda said as he passed a turkey through a car window. “Thanksgiving is a time to celebrate all the blessings we have in life, and if the Los Angeles Dodgers have a chance to give back to our fans, then we are happy to do it.”
It was the third straight year the Dodgers Dream Foundation has hosted the Turkey giveaway. The DDF that is one of two official Dodger charitable organizations provides the location for the giveaway, which is the Dodger Stadium, while Ralphs/Food 4 Less provides the turkeys and the fixings. “Tonight, with the help of our friends council members Garcetti and Reyes, and assembly member De León, the Dodgers were able to provide for families who needed a little help,” Howard Sunkin said. “With our partners, Ralphs and Food 4 Less, we were able to pass out more than 600 Thanksgiving dinners.”
Furthermore, the Dodgers Dream Foundation was created to provide educational, athletic and recreational opportunities for the youth of the Greater Los Angeles community. The Foundation places special importance on helping traditionally under-served youth. And as part of the continuing outreach effort the DDF will also pass out hams and the side dishes in December. And it will surely be a successful one as the reaching out for Thanksgiving turned out to be.
The LA Dodgers proved that they are not just a team who aims for winning their games, but also concerned citizens who are willing to lend a hand in times of needs. In addition, this also serves as their token of gratitude to their fans who supported the team all these years.
