Spring Training facility; To be Ready for 2009
Spring Training needs a lot of preparation for every team. In fact, Monday morning was the date for a ceremonial groundbreaking on a new Spring Training facility in Arizona, though construction started about a month ago. The stadium will be shared by the LA Dodgers and the Chicago White Sox and will open in 2009. “This is a great addition to the baseball scene here in Arizona,” said Arizona governor Janet Napolitano. “Our goal is to be the baseball capital of the world.”
Vin Scully, who is a longtime Dodgers broadcaster, was the emcee of the event and featured brief comments from various city and state officials, as well as White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf and Dodgers owner Frank McCourt. Many local fans of both teams were also present at the public event. McCourt referenced that 2008 would be the golden anniversary of the Dodgers moving from Brooklyn to Los Angeles as he talked about the team starting another legacy in Spring Training 2009. “Spring Training is an intimate setting for fans to watch their team take shape,” Frank McCourt said. “We are grateful for this opportunity to bring the experience closer to our legions of West Coast fans.”
The LA Dodgers were the last team among the West Coast franchises to join the Cactus League. Jerry Reinsdorf referenced his days growing up in Brooklyn and following the Dodgers before moving to Chicago, and joked that it “took 50 years to be reunited with them” when the teams share the stadium. “It's going to be a wonderful experience,” said the White Sox owner. “People are going to be happy these two franchises are in Glendale.”
Though the franchises will be affiliated with the city of Glendale, the facility will actually be located on Glendale-owned land in the city of Phoenix. Moreover, the mayors and council members from both cities spoke at the event to talk about how the facility balances economic development with community needs, and Jerry Reinsdorf recognized the cooperation involved in “one city building a ballpark in another city" and joking how that might be tough to do in a city like Chicago. Furthermore, the 10,000-seat stadium, with an additional 3,000 lawn seats, will cost approximately $76 million to build. Two-thirds of that funding is coming from the Arizona Sports and Tourism Authority. However, the remaining one-third is being funded by Glendale based on sales taxes and other revenues from a mixed-use project near the ballpark developed by Rightpath Development Group that will include residential and retail space, as well as a hotel and golf course. Five-hundred acres are being developed in total.
The facility will include four Major League practice fields, eight Minor League practice fields, two practice infields, and 118,000 square feet of clubhouse space for the two teams. It is situated short distance form Glendale's Sports and Entertainment District, which features the arena of the NHL's Phoenix Coyotes and the stadium of the NFL's Arizona Cardinals.
The government representatives all spoke of the economic impact that the facility will have in the region. “This is a great economic opportunity for the Valley,” Napolitano said, referencing the projections that the facility could generate $20 million per year for the region. “The Cactus League is tremendous for the economic impact it has on the community,” Debbie Johnson of the Arizona Sports and Tourism Authority said. After the lineup of speakers there was a signing of a home plate that will be displayed in the new stadium, followed by a ceremonial shovel dig.
As the facilities are all set for the teams, the Spring Training will surely be a successful one.
