Celebrating the Team's Excellent Center Fielders
The Dodgers celebrate their players, as they celebrate their 50th anniversary of coming to Los Angeles. They have had good center fielders. Juan Pierre hoped to continue the proud tradition, but he was not able to capture Dodgers fans' imaginations.
Furthermore, John Shelby played a valuable role in the 1988 Dodgers World Series championship. On that year, he had a Major League-best 24-game hitting streak. Shelby had difficulty coming in to catch shallow fly balls, but he was excellent at preventing extra-base hits. He was quick on the bases, but wasn't a base stealer. On the other hand, by December of 1990, Fred Claire, the general manager of the Dodgers at the time, signed a pesky center fielder named Brett Butler. Butler was the best leadoff hitter. In 1981 as a rookie with the Atlanta Braves, he was the Dodgers' worst nightmare. He helped the Braves to defeat the Dodgers out of the National League West title in 1982. He also joined the San Francisco Giants in 1988, and he caused more havoc for the Dodgers. Butler is a small man physically. But Brett Butler played baseball with such passion that he made up for his limited size. This little figure would come to the plate to begin the game.
Not like Juan Pierre, Brett Butler did not display the bunt every game, but every team knew he would bunt at any time and in any count. Butler had the best bat control of any Major Leaguer that I have seen. He must have had at least 40 bunt hits every year. Butler would be on base, after an average of seemingly 10 to 14 pitches per at-bat. His lifetime on-base percentage of .377 was outstanding. On the bases, Brett Butler was a terror to the opposition. His speed enabled him to steal 558 bases, 24th in Major League history. Butler didn't dance off the base to take the lead, unlike most base stealers; however, he still was a distraction to the pitchers. Defensively, Butler was excellent. Although he never had a strong throwing arm, runners respected him enough not to take the extra base. He averaged two errors a season with the Dodgers, but in 1992 he didn't commit an error. In fact, he averaged six assists a season while with the Dodgers.
The Dodgers have talked about moving Juan Pierre to left field, this off-season. Their fans resented Pierre's $44 million, five-year contract because we felt general manager Ned Colletti overpaid him and his salary prevented Colletti from obtaining a power hitter or a better pitcher. Pierre's hard-working and friendly personality should make him a fan favorite.
