Colletti Clarifies the Story on Little's Departure

The LA Dodgers general manager can go back in arranging the roster that did was not completed in 2007. He can go back to fending off questions about Alex Rodriguez and Jason Schmidt and Juan Pierre as he was confident that second baseman Jeff Kent will return in 2008.

Ned Colletti took off for Orlando, Florida, shortly after Joe Torre was introduced as his new manager on Monday, as well as the general managers meetings that traditionally lay the groundwork for off-season trades and free-agent signings. First, Ned Colletti shed further light on why the Joe Torre hiring was needed. For the first time, he revealed that former manager Grady Little first approached him during the season with thoughts that he might not return in 2008. Ned Colletti said Little expressed these thoughts even before Jeff Kent went public with frustrations that seemed to illustrate a rift had developed in the clubhouse between older and younger players. As for Ned Colletti's current task, judging from comments by him and his new field manager, bolstering the pitching staff has at least pulled even on the priority list with finding a bat for the middle of the order, which clearly was the focus when the season ended. Even Joe Torre, after admitting he knew very little about the roster he inherited, mentioned “zeroing in on pitching.”

Furthermore, Ned Colletti said the recovery of Schmidt from major shoulder surgery has gone without a setback, but the team can't approach the winter counting on the right-hander, who signed a $47 million contract last winter and won only one game. Schmidt still has not been cleared to begin throwing. “You don't really know until you see them throw and compete to have a comfort level,” Colleti said. “We're pleased with the steps he's taken, but you can't tell the future.”

That leaves the LA Dodgers with Chad Billingsley, Derek Lowe and Brad Penny at the front end of the rotation. The hope is that Esteban Loaiza's poor performance after he was claimed from Oakland will reverse with an off-season to heal. The fifth spot is a scramble, with the signing of Randy Wolf still possible as he heals from shoulder surgery. The status of second baseman Jeff Kent, who hit .302 with a club-high 20 homers and a vested $9 million option is the question that apparently has been answered. He has not publicly said he's returning, but according to Joe Torre and Ned Colletti, they expect him to.

In addition, Ned Colletti dodged a question about center fielder Juan Pierre moving to left field, which has been considered because of Pierre's throwing arm and the availability of free agent center fielders like Torii Hunter and Andruw Jones. Catcher Russell Martin, first baseman James Loney and outfielders Matt Kemp and Andre Ethier has Colletti optimistic, with a hopefully healthy shortstop Rafael Furcal and the core of young players. “The past year, as painful as it was at the end, there was a lot of progress made,” Colleti stated.

On the other hand, despite the talk of pitching improvements, fans are more focused on Rodriguez. The Dodgers seem prepared to enter into negotiations for the former Yankees star, particularly because he could also shore up third base, although their appetite for a $350 million contract is very questionable. “If they'd be interested in coming here, we'd be curious to hear what they have to say,” said Ned Colletti of Rodriguez. “We'd have to see what the parameters are and if it does make sense.”

Ned Colletti said he told his former skipper not to make a hasty decision as the season unraveled, as for Grady Little. But Little took plenty of time, and the more time he took, the more Colletti believed he was about to lose a manager. The search began while Little technically still had the job, but with nobody sure he still wanted the job. “I told him when the season ended to go home and think about it,” said Ned Colletti. “I told him he could manage this club, but a long time went by. The World Series was upon us and he called, but the conversation wasn't convincing. I said to let me think this thing through and in the process we talked to Joe Torre.”

In addition, Ned Colletti also said he was prevented from making any announcements during the World Series. Colleti contacted Joe Girardi during the World Series, but said no agreement was reached. However, there were reports that Girardi turned down an offer from the Dodgers to replace Joe Torre with the Yankees. The team ultimately bought Grady Little out of his contract.

As the LA Dodgers continues to settle the status of players and staff, let’s get ready and watch out for the team’s outstanding skills next season.
