Torre: a Blast from the Past
Joe Torre prepares himself with a new team in a familiar old league. Baseball has been Torre’s passion; in fact, he played for the Atlanta Braves, St. Louis Cardinals, and New York Mets as well as managed all three teams.
Joe Torre revealed a secret on Monday, that Tommy Lasorda does not even have a clue. And Lasorda, a guy with great sources, has been friendly with Torre and his family for years. “Man, what a surprise,” said Tommy Lasorda, having discovered that the Dodgers' esteemed new manager grew up in Brooklyn as -- horror of horrors -- a New York Giants fan. “I thought living in Brooklyn, everybody was a Dodger fan,” said Lasorda. I just found that out about Joe today. We'll get that out of him, just like we did with Ned [Colletti].”
However, Ned Colletti, employed by the San Francisco Giants when he was hired as the Dodgers' general manager after the 2005 season, quickly found out from Tommy Lasorda that all Giants ties; to say nothing of rings and memorabilia, were not welcome in Dodgertown. Now here comes Joe Torre, with his four World Series championship rings as manager of the New York Yankees, offering his revelation of a youthful infatuation with the hated Giants. “I might as well get this out real quick,” said Joe Torre from a podium planted in center field at Dodger Stadium, following introductions by club owner Frank McCourt and baseball's enduring bard, play-by-play voice Vin Scully. “I grew up [in Brooklyn] with four brothers and sisters. We had the Giants, Dodgers and Yankees; we were pretty spoiled. I have managed the Yankees, and now I get to manage the Dodgers -- and I was a Giants fan. I want to apologize for that now."
As long as Joe Torre finds ways to defeat the Giants fairly consistently, none will be necessary, along with the Colorado Rockies, San Diego Padres and Arizona Diamondbacks in a National League West that might be the most competitive of the Majors' six divisions. A diplomatic gentleman, Joe Torre freely praised the LA Dodgers; their history, their legendary players, their place in the game and the mark they've left. “I've had a number of Dodgers on my coaching staffs,” he said, citing Rube Walker, Joe Pignatano and Don Zimmer. “Every single one would talk about the Dodgers all the time. Growing up in the '40s and '50s, into the '60s, '70s and '80s, when I managed, the Dodgers were always special -- and I certainly expect the Dodgers will always be special. It's a great feeling to be here.”
In addition, Joe Torre also extended praise to Tommy Lasorda, summoning the two-time World Series champion and Hall of Famer to join him on the stage. Torre admitted he didn't think much of it when Lasorda began the practice of hugging players. “Now, look where we are,” said Torre, smiling. “We hug at the drop of a hat.”
Furthermore, Walter Alston managed the Brooklyn Dodgers in Joe Torre’s youth, and went on to be their leader in Los Angeles before he was succeeded in 1977 by Tommy Lasorda. On his way to the Hall of Fame, Alston won 2,040 games as a manager. However, Joe Torre moved passed Walter Alston in 2007 for eighth place on the all-time list with 2,067 career victories. Joe Torre stands alone with 76 wins in the postseason. And he has had the advantage of extended playoffs. It is the fervent hope of long-suffering LA Dodgers fans that Joe Torre pads that lead in the seasons ahead. It will help them forgive those early Giant transgressions traced to Joe Torre’s Brooklyn youth.
