Thirty years of the Legendary Dodgers

Thirty years of commemorating the LA Dodgers, the veteran team, they had proven their worth as a legendary MLB team. The players performed very well.

The team breezed to the World Series to play against the New York Yankees by 1977. Unfortunately, the team lost to the team of Yankees. Reggie Jackson, also known as Mr. October, blasted three home runs off three pitchers in Game 6. The team of Los Angeles returned to the World Series to play with New York once again. Rookie Bob Welch struck out Mr. October and the Los Angeles Dodgers fans were amazed at the ice water running through Welch’s veins, because he seemed unfazed by the excitement of the World Series.

Dodgers’ best starter, Jerry Reiuss, sprained his ankle while running in the outfield, a few days before the 1981 regular season started. Though Reuss probably could have started Opening Day, Tommy Lasorda did not want to risk more serious injury to Reuss. Lasorda chose to start the rookie sensation Fernando Valenzuela on Opening Day against the team of Houston Astros. Valenzuela, a 20-year-old Mexican left-hander featuring a screwball, pitched in the last part of the 1980 season after skipping Triple-A.

The LA Dodgers shut out the Astros on Opening Day, behind Fernando Valenzuela. The previous season, Houston kept Los Angeles out of the playoffs by beating LA in a one-game playoff. The rookie Valenzuela led a veteran Dodgers team to the best record in the National League West until the work stoppage came in June. When baseball resumed, baseball decided to have the winner of the first half of the season play the winner of the second half of the season. Moreover, the LA Dodgers faced the Astros in the playoffs. They fell behind in the series, but those 1981 Dodgers did not know how to say quit. Fernando Valenzuela, who also had ice water running through his veins as well as superior baseball instincts, led the miraculous comeback.

Then, to go to the World Series, the Dodgers played against the Montreal Expos, who had not been to the playoffs before or since. Again the team of Dodgers fell behind in the series, but they battled back to tie the series at two. The Game 5 was postponed to Monday afternoon due to snowy weather. Rick Monday became a Dodgers legend and hated in Montreal forever on a frigid Monday afternoon as he hit a dramatic pinch-hit home run that sent the Dodgers to the Fall Classic.

The Dodgers again met the Yankees. The players knew this was their last chance to win a World Series championship together. It would be sweeter to win their only championship as a team against the Yankees, the team that kept them from winning two championships in 1977 and 1978.

Furthermore, the Dodgers team fell behind two games in the series but they refused to let the Yankees win their third World Series since 1977. The Dodgers began to win, when the series returned to Los Angeles. Fernando Valenzuela and Steve Howe made Reggie Jackson a non-factor in the series. In addition, the Dodgers became World Series champions in six games. Three players Ron Cey, Steve Yeager and Pedro Guerrero, shared the World Series Most Valuable Player award, for the first and only time in the history of the World Series. Fernando Valenzuela became the first and only player to earn the Rookie of the Year and Cy Young awards in the same year.

By 1988, nobody who knew anything about baseball thought it was possible that the Dodgers team would go to the World Series. On paper, the 1988 Dodgers were an average team. But the 1988 Dodgers proved that a team that has overwhelming desire and works as a team could live in the memories of all baseball fans.

In April of 1988 season, Orel Hershiser had five wins and no losses. Hershiser finished the season with the record of fifty-nine consecutive scoreless innings that helped the team reach the playoffs.

Today, the team of LA Dodgers continues what the team had started. For the upcoming season, the fantastic team will prove once again that they can also make a history in MLB.
