LA Dodgers make roster moves
Every off-season of a sports league, a club decides on its roster as well as the things that they should plan for the coming season.
As the LA Dodgers cleared three spots off their 40-man roster Friday, backup catcher Chad Moeller and young right-handed pitcher Zach Hammes accepted Minor League assignments, and left-hander Tim Hamulack on the other hand, chose free agency.
Chad Moeller, acquired in a midseason deal with the Cincinnati Reds, was impressive in brief opportunities during a September call up. He has spent time in the Major Leagues every season since 2000, and he played a career-high 101 games with the Milwaukee Brewers in 2004. However, the 23-year-old Zach Hammes, a second-round pick in the 2002 First-Year Player Draft went 5-8 with a 5.23 ERA at Double-A Jacksonville this year, and he currently has a 5.06 ERA in five appearances in the Arizona Fall League.
After injuring his elbow and undergoing Tommy John elbow ligament replacement surgery, Tim Hamulack missed almost the whole 2007 season. The 30-year-old split the 2006 season between Los Angeles and Triple-A Las Vegas.
The moves clear room on the 40-man roster for the expected activation off the 60-day disabled list of injured players Hong-Chih Kuo, Yhency Brazoban, Chin-hui Tsao, Jason Schmidt, Randy Wolf and Jason Repko.
On the other hand, despite a stream of rumors about the Dodgers' interest in Joe Girardi, it's unlikely the club will do anything until after the World Series, per MLB edict. An ESPN The Magazine report implied the LA Dodgers are considering replacing manager Grady Little with Girardi. A report in the Daily News suggests Joe Girardi actually is being considered for a job as bench coach. Contracts for the entire team coaching staff soon expire, and each member has been given permission to seek opportunities elsewhere. Girardi currently is under consideration for the vacant Yankees manager job, and it's not clear whether he would be interested in a bench-coach job, especially one that would appear to make him heir apparent to the current manager if things go south. Grady Little is signed through 2008 with an option for 2009.
The team of Los Angeles Dodgers is considering all kinds of interesting wrinkles in their 2008 schedule, as reported by MLB.com's Barry Bloom earlier this week. The teams of Dodgers and Padres are being considered for Major League Baseball's first games in China, an exhibition series in late March. China is hosting the Olympics next year, and the exhibition series would be held in a stadium seating 12,000. In addition, a decision is expected at the next owners meeting, November 14th to 15th in Florida.
Los Angeles also are considering playing at least one game in 2008 at the Memorial Coliseum as part of the celebration marking their 50th anniversary in Los Angeles. The Dodgers played in the Los Angeles Coliseum for four years during the construction of Dodger Stadium and dealt with a bizarre configuration of the oval stadium to facilitate baseball. The team has not released the schedule for their final Spring Training at Vero Beach, Florida, but the 2008 Spring Training schedule released by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim shows only one split-squad game with the Dodgers on the 27th of March at Angel Stadium.
