Watson Promoted to Assistant General Manager
Every team undergoes changes depending on their needs as well as the things that they should improve on. One of these changes includes the change of management.
De Jon Watson on Wednesday was promoted to assistant general manager of player development by general manager Ned Colletti, one day before the one-year anniversary of his hiring as LA Dodgers director of player development. Watson, who is 41 years old, will keep his duties as farm director, with expanded input on Major League transactions. According to Ned Colletti, De Jon Watson also will be responsible for helping ease player transition from the Minor Leagues to the Major Leagues. Watson came to the team as Terry Collins’ replacement after three years as director of scouting for the team of Cleveland Indians.
During an interview, De Jon Watson was asked about his daily routine as the Dodgers’ farm director. “The first thing I get is my Minor League update of injuries at about 4:24 every morning. Then I get an update on the overall industry, my daily clips. Then I proceed to touch base with each of our managers at each level. After I speak with them, I try and contact the roving coordinators who are out in the field to see what they are doing with our young players and see how we're doing in terms of making progress with them. After that, if I'm at a Minor League affiliate myself, I'll go out to the ballpark and watch them go through their routine and interact with the players and make sure they're healthy and that we're sticking to our overall player plan. Once the game is over, I'll get down to the clubhouse and talk about the game with the managers and see what we may need to address the following day, whether it's fundamentals or something else. I'll get back to my hotel and get my updates from the game reports and I can get those online once they've been submitted by our managers and pitching coaches. I can get any medical updates and then if we have to make any moves, we can make moves at that time,” he replied.
The outstanding team also announced several changes in the training staff. Assistant athletic trainer Todd Tomczyk will assume some of the responsibilities previously handled by Stan Johnston, who was dismissed earlier this month. Todd Tomczyk came to the team last year from the Cleveland Indians.
On the other hand, Sue Falsone, who has worked with the LA Dodgers in her role as director of physical therapy for the private Athletes Performance Institute, has been hired as the MLB’s first female physical therapist. Falsone will remain affiliated with API.
Furthermore, Brendon Huttman was named strength coach, replacing Doug Jarrow, who was dismissed with Johnston. Huttman follows Watson from the Indians organization, where he was Minor League strength and conditioning coordinator.
Ichiro Tani returns for his fourth season as message therapist and acupuncturist. Greg Harrel, previously trainer at Triple-A Las Vegas, was promoted to head Minor League trainer and David Rivera the organization's Minor League physical therapist, was promoted to Minor League rehabilitation coordinator.
The players as well as the staff and management of Los Angeles Dodgers will continue to work with great determination and excellent teamwork to be able to meet their common goals. And one of these is to win their games and be hailed champions!
