The All-Star break comes at a great time as the bullpen is worn out and the starting rotation has been hit with injuries, for the team of LA Dodgers pitching staff. The bullpen is exhausted and before the game manager Grady Little was still unresolved on who will begin Sunday’s game. The bullpen has worked 36 2/3 innings in the last eight games entering Saturday. In addition, Grady Little finally decided on Mark Hendrickson. Randy Wolf was placed on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday and fellow starter Brad Penny has a blister on his finger, which may bother him in his next start.

Moreover, reliever Joe Beimel was brought to the hospital Tuesday and Chin-hui Tsao, who came off the DL on June 29, is limited out of the ‘pen because the team of Dodgers do not want him to re-injure his shoulder. Also, reliever Brett Tomko is struggling so bad he gets booed before he even makes a pitch. “This last week we've run into a buzz saw here with the fact that three times they've gone five innings, once four and once three,” said manager Little, referring to the lack of innings pitched by his starters. “Throughout the course of week that will take a toll, especially when one guy is in the hospital. We've got 12 pitchers on the staff, but if they're working three or four days out of five, they're going to end up on the DL.”

The All-Star break offers a four-day rest for the team and opportunity for the pitchers to get some rest and get healthy. Brad Penny and closer Takashi Saito are the only pitchers who will be making the trip to San Francisco, and neither is expected to pitch more than one inning. As far as this season the pitching staff has been the strong point for the LA Dodgers, with the starters posting a 33-31 record with a 4.06 ERA and the bullpen at 15-8 with a 3.41 ERA. But on the current homestand the bullpen has blown one save and lost 3 games, including Friday’s series opener versus the Florida Marlins. “Oh yeah, a bullpen can get overworked, but there are a lot of factors that go into in,” reliever Rudy Seanez stated, who has pitched 3 2/3 innings on the homestand. “It's tough, especially if you have to go out there two or three days in a row. It takes a toll on the arm,” he continued. Furthermore, reliever Jonathan Broxton has pitched in five of the last eight games and Takashi Saito, who blew his second save in 25 chances Friday, has pitched in four of the last eight games. “You have to really give those guys credit,” reliever Eric Stults said, who pitched three innings Thursday. “I mean, Broxton is a bulldog, he goes out there five or six games in a row. It's not easy. You have to be mentally tough to come out of the bullpen.”

In addition, the LA Dodgers team signed reliever Roberto Hernandez to a Minor league contract Friday. Hernandez last pitched with the team of Cleveland Indians before he was released on the 28th of June. Hernandez was 3-1 with a 6.23 ERA in 26 innings for the Indians.

When a pitcher has an ERA under three, I don't think the win-loss column is indicative of how he's pitched.”
