Los Angeles Dodgers Information

Florida Marlins 6, Los Angeles Dodgers 5

The Los Angeles Dodgers did their best but still struggled on their Friday night game at the Dodger Stadium. As the LA Dodgers faced the team of Florida Marlins, they were defeated by the Florida Marlins by 6-5. It was an excellent game that was seen by a crowd of 51,050.

The team of Florida Marlins started scoring during the first inning. Dontrelle Willis took a two-hitter and a 3-0 lead into the fifth before the LA Dodgers pulled ahead with five two-out runs. The big blow was Russell Martin's two-run homer. Luis Gonzalez scored when Jeremy Hermida tried to one-hand Nomar Garciaparra's routine fly to right and dropped it for the Florida Marlins’ 72nd error; most in the majors. Chad Billingsley, who pitched seven scoreless innings of three-hit ball last Sunday against San Diego, allowed Hanley Ramirez’s ninth career leadoff homer. Hanley Ramirez's seven leadoff homers last year tied the major league record for rookies, set by Garciaparra in 1997 with Boston. The team of the Marlins tied it 5-all in the ninth against closer Takashi Saito on a one-out walk to Dan Uggla and an RBI double by Miguel Cabrera, who will be Saito's teammate at Tuesday's All-Star game. The blown save was the second this season for Saito in 25 attempts, and only his fourth in 51 career save situations. The right-hander came in having walked only three batters in his previous 35 2-3 innings this season. “The key to the game was when they scored off Saito,” according to LA Dodgers manager Grady Little. “That's a backbreaker. We needed to recover from that, and we weren't able to.” Hanley Ramirez, the 2006 NL Rookie of the Year, trimmed the LA Dodgers’ lead to 5-4 in the seventh with his 14th homer; putting him within three of last year’s total.

Jeremy Hermida drew a leadoff walk in the 10th from Brett Tomko (1-7). One out later, pinch-runner Eric Reed stole second. After a walk to Alfredo Amezaga, pinch-hitter Todd Linden beat out a potential double-play grounder, leaving runners at the corners with two outs. Hanley Ramirez then dropped a perfect bunt down the third-base line and Tony Abreu had no play as Eric Reed scored. “Nobody was expecting it, and that's why it worked so well,” said Reed. “The guy threw it right down the middle and Hanley laid down a perfect bunt. Henley's game is more than just power. It's also speed. And it's always a weapon when he's able to get a bunt in critical situations, because nobody plays in on him.”

Meanwhile, Marlins’ relief pitcher, Renyel Pinto (1-3) allowed one hit over two scoreless innings for his first major league win, and Kevin Gregg got three outs for his 18th save in 19 attempts. Gregg retired his first two batters before walking the next three, but Juan Pierre popped up a fastball to shortstop and Ramirez caught it for the final out. “It didn't look pretty, but we won,” Gregg said, who has walked 25 batters in 50 2-3 innings. “Tonight it was a little bit of a mechanical flaw - just getting inside the ball and pushing it off the inside corner of the plate. Some of the walks I use in certain situations, but I feel comfortable pitching with guys on base. I don't want them to be that high, but it's working for me so far, so I can't complain.”

Finally, the game became even more challenging to the team of LA Dodgers as Hanley Ramirez surprised Chad Billingsley by homering on his second pitch. Ramirez hit another one later, then shocked the Dodgers with a go-ahead bunt single in the 10th inning. Ramirez's impressive display put the Florida Marlins to achieve a 6-5 victory over the LA Dodgers to its third straight loss.

In addition, the win allowed Dontrelle Willis to enjoy his latest no-decision after spending part of the week attending to his ailing wife, Natalee, back in Miami. “I always go out there with my family in mind,” said Willis. ”My wife's sick, but I didn't let that (distract) me today. I went out there with her in my heart and I did the best I could tonight.” Willis allowed five runs (four earned) and seven hits over six innings with six strikeouts after squandering an early 3-0 lead.

Although the LA Dodgers lost the game, this will never stop them from trying their very best to aim for the victory that they deserve.
