Los Angeles Dodgers defeated 2-0 by the Arizona Diamondbacks
It was a great game for the team of Arizona Diamondbacks but not so great for the team of Los Angeles Dodgers. The Arizona Diamondbacks defeated the LA Dodgers by 2-0 in their game that was held on Wednesday night, at the Chase Field. Brandon Webb threw seven shutout innings to make the Diamondbacks win a 2-0 victory against the LA Dodgers.
The Arizona Diamondbacks lost the back-to-back games to the LA Dodgers. During the first inning, the team of Diamondbacks stretched out a run without a hit against Derek Lowe (8-7). First baseman James Loney was charged with a throwing error on Tony Clark’s grounder, after one-out walks to Stephen Drew and Orlando Hudson. That loaded the bases for Chad Tracy, whose fly ball to left made it 1-0. Brandon Webb (8-5) struck out 3, allowed 7 hits and issued a season-high five walks. Webb stranded runners in every inning but the fifth and seemed to be pitching from the stretch all night. The LA Dodgers left thirteen men on base. As Webb fought with his command, the LA Dodgers put men in scoring position in each of the first four innings, but Webb pitched out of trouble every time. He gave up back-to-back singles to open the sixth. But Luis Gonzalez was thrown out by right fielder Byrnes trying for a double, and the Dodgers didn't threaten. Grady Little, the manager of Dodgers stated that, “We had some opportunities there later on in the game but we couldn't get the big hit when we needed to”. Webb stranded two more base runners in the seventh before leaving after throwing 115 pitches. The Arizona Diamondbacks weren’t out of danger yet. Meanwhile, Derek Lowe settle down after his wild first inning, allowing only three hits through six innings. He left after giving up Byrnes’ two-out RBI single in the seventh inning. Lowe allowed two runs (one earned) and five hits in 6 2-3 innings. According to him, “Any time you come to the park and you're facing Brandon Webb, you kind of expect games like this,” he continued, “You don't expect to beat him 7-6.” During the eighth inning however, the LA Dodgers loaded the bases with one out. After Juan Cruz struck out pinch-hitter Olmedo Saenz, Melvin summoned Jose Valverde, who got Rafael Furcal to ground out. “We put ourselves in a position where we could have lost it all in that inning,” Melvin stated. “Valverde coming in that situation, no room for error - the pitching was unbelievable today.” Jose Valverde worked a 1-2-3 ninth, striking out Russell Martin and Jeff Kent to end the game.
The Arizona Diamondbacks defeated the LA Dodgers for only the second time in eight games, knocking the LA Dodgers out of the NL West lead. Arizona (45-34) and San Diego (44-33) are both 11 games over .500 but the Padres lead the division based on their winning percentage. The LA Dodgers (44-34) are a half-game behind. The game was witnessed and enjoyed by a crowd of 26,867. The LA Dodgers had to try their best for their next game and not really mind the lost for Wednesday’s game.
