Los Angeles Dodgers Information
The Successful Homecoming Game of Martin
The Los Angeles Dodgers faced the Toronto Blue Jays on Thursday night. The game was seen by a crowd of 25,265 at the Rogers Centre. The game highlighted the homecoming performance of Russell Martin, who hit a bases-loaded double in the eighth inning, flashing a six-run rally, as Jeff Kent added a two-run homer and the LA Dodgers defeated the team of Toronto Blue Jays with 8-4.
In the second inning the Toronto Blue Jays opened the scoring as Aaron Hill hit a two-run homer to right. Shaun Marcum did not allow a hit until Tony Abreu singled through the right side with two outs during the fifth inning. But LA Dodgers tied the game during the sixth when Jeff Kent homered to left. The team of Toronto Blue Jays broke the tie in the sixth inning against left-hander Mark Hendrickson. Matt Stairs led off with a double, went to third on Troy Glaus' fly out and, following an intentional walk to Frank Thomas, scored when Gregg Zaun flied out to left. Gregg Zaun had another sacrifice fly in the eighth off reliever Jonathan Broxton. Chad Billingsley, who’s making his first start of the season in place of the injured Jason Schmidt, allowed two runs as well as two hits over 3 2-3 innings. This was admired by Manager Grady Little in Billingsley’s first start of the year. Billingsley walked three and struck out one. Billingsley stated that, “It felt good to be back out there again starting. The main thing was trying to pace myself. I didn’t want to burn myself out after the first 25 pitches.”
To begin the eighth, the LA Dodgers trailed 3-2 before mounting a one-out rally against right-hander Casey Janssen (2-1). Before Jeff Kent doubled off the top of the right-field wall, Nomar Garciaparra greeted Casey Janssen with a single. Grady Little said, “You wonder what would have happened if had ball just gone over the fence. It stayed in the park and good things followed.” Meanwhile, Luis Gonzalez was walked intentionally to bring up Russell Martin, who doubled into the right-field corner, scoring Nomar Garciaparra and Jeff Kent. Before Matt Kemp chased Casey Janssen with an RBI double, Olmedo Saenz followed with a bloop single to center, scoring Luis Gonzalez. Right-hander Jason Frasor replaced Casey Janssen and gave up RBI singles to Tony Abreu and Rafael Furcal before getting Juan Pierre and Nomar Garciaparra to line out. In addition, Casey Janssen did not retire any of the six batters he faced, letting six runs and five hits and a walk. The ERA of Casey Janssen was raised by the outing from 0.95 to 2.37. Janssen entered the game having allowed four earned runs in 38 innings this season. Moreover, Rudy Seanez (4-1) got two outs for the victory.
It was Russell Martin’s first time to play in his hometown. He was overwhelmed by local media, holding a press conference for some two dozen reporters before Tuesday’s opener. In the three-game series, Martin was going 3-for-12 with a homer and four RBIs. Martin is 3-for-4 with 10 RBIs in bases loaded situations this season, including two doubles and one grand slam. The impressed manager, Grady Little said, “He's been a busy young man here for a few days but he stands up to situations like that as well as anyone that we have. He went up there that last at-bat with the bases loaded and had it in his mind he wasn't going to be overanxious. He got good results.”
The fans enjoyed the LA Dodgers-Toronto Blue Jays game. It was a fantastic and exciting game. Both teams have shown their best and everyone was delighted.
