Los Angeles Dodgers defeat the New York Mets 5-3
It was an excellent game of the LA Dodgers as the team faced the New York Mets in
Dodgers Stadium on a June 11 game in front of a 40,467 crowd. The Monday night game featured the performance of 39-year old left fielder, Luis Gonzalez. The game was the first between the teams since the New York Mets swept the LA Dodgers in their best-of-five National League division series last October.
In the first inning, the New York Mets had a 2-0 lead on RBI singles of Shawn Green and David Wright, who extended his hitting streak to thirteen games. Carlos Delgado then doubled to start the fourth inning and scored on a two-out single by Carlos Gomez that led the Mets to a score of 3-0. However, Russell Martin and Andre Ethier’s RBI singles made a tie score in the fourth inning and a run scoring doubled by Luis Gonzalez as their first three hits of the game. The three earned runs matched the total allowed by Orlando Hernandez in his previous five starts spanning 33 innings. Hernandez gave up seven hits and five runs, four earned, in 5 2-3 innings and he walked three and struck out four. Luis Gonzalez entered one double behind Eddie Murray, the LA Dodgers’ hitting coach. In the fourth, Luis tied Eddie and passed him in the sixth, giving him 561 two-base hits. Luis Gonzalez even stated that, “Eddie was great. I took a couple of photos with him for me to keep. Eddie's a Hall of Famer. It's a nice accomplishment to have. (But) I just want to move on. It's important to me to win championships.” To start the sixth inning, Luis Gonzalez hit a liner to right-center off Orlando Hernandez (3-2). Moreover, James Loney hit a double one out later to drive in Luis Gonzalez and give the LA Dodgers a leading score of 4-3. When center fielder Carlos Beltran mishandled the ball for an error, James Loney went to third as recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas on Sunday, but was tagged out by catcher Paul Lo Duca while trying to score on Tony Abreu's suicide squeeze attempt. At first, Lo Duca tried to double up Abreu, but his throw was wild, and Tony Abreu went all the way to third on the error. Pinch-hitter Wilson Betemit followed with an RBI single to complete the scoring.
New York Mets’ third baseman said about Luis Gonzalez, “To be able to do what he's done, just looking at the scoreboard and seeing the numbers he's put up over the course of his career, I think he's extremely underrated.” On the other hand, Randy Wolf earned the victory, allowing nine hits and three runs in six innings. The fourth LA Dodgers pitcher, Takashi Saito worked the ninth for his 17th save in eighteen chances as the team won for just the second time in seven games. Randy Wolf together with three relievers had a great teamwork to retire the final 12 New York batters. The success of the LA Dodgers was led by the team’s outfielder who hit two more, the second placing him in position to score the go-ahead run in the sixth inning. This led to the 5-3 victory of the LA Dodgers over the team of the New York Mets.
The game was indeed enjoyed by LA Dodgers fans. Every player tried their best to win the game. And it was a successful game, indeed.
