Grady Little: The Team Needs Reorganization
Grady Little, as the Los Angeles Dodgers was disappointed of the result of the Dodgers vs. Padres match-up on Wednesday night’s game.
At Tuesday night, the remarkable return of Jason Schmidt was not enough. Randy Wolf on the other hand, made a great effort for the second consecutive start Wednesday night, leaving the Los Angeles Dodgers with the strong task of avoiding a series sweep Thursday night needing Hong-Chih Kuo (0-1) to beat Jake Peavy (7-1). They will need more than the 1-for-8 they got from Juan Pierre and Rafael Furcal at the top of the batting order, encouraging Grady Little to concede he was close to shaking up the lineup. Grady Little believes that the team has to improve their performances, he knew they have to deal with it.
Geoff Blum (.184 entering the game) has to be kept from driving in four runs from the number 8 spot in the order as well as former Dodger Hiram Bocachica (.091) from lacing a pair of doubles from the No.7 spot. Both players were playing in place of the injured Khalil Greene as well as Brian Giles, but they drove in all five runs off Randy Wolf, who has lasted only five innings in each of his last two starts and allowed nine earned runs. Randy Wolf began the game with a pair of walks that was his usual early-game struggles, while Hiram Bocachica and Geoff Blum were in the middle of all five runs in the second and third innings. Andre Ethier lined out to third and third baseman Tony Abreu followed with a play that showed the highs and lows of starting a rookie. He rocketed a Maddux offering into the left-field corner and the ball took an odd carom away from former Dodgers left fielder Jose Cruz Jr. Meanwhile, Luis Gonzalez headed for home with the play behind him and running with two out. Tony Abreu tried to stretch a double into a triple with the play in front of him. Cruz showed off his strong arm by gunning Abreu out at third for the final out of the inning. It became a compound crime when plate umpire Jeff Kellogg ruled that Gonzalez did not touch home plate before Tony Abreu was removed. The LA Dodgers would have had another run in, if Tony Abreu stopped at second base. And Grady Little would have pinch-hit Olmedo Saenz for Randy Wolf.
On the other hand, Jeff Kent slugged his first home run in almost two weeks. Nomar Garciaparra doubled off the fence in deep left-center against Hoffman in the ninth, barely missing his first home run in almost two months. Furthermore, Brett took over for Randy Wolf and struck out four in two innings. As the LA Dodgers did something right in this game, they also had failures that were evident in the top of the fifth inning. Luis Gonzalez singled Kent to third and he scored on Russell Martin's sacrifice fly. In addition, the game results placed the LA Dodgers in third, 1 ½ games behind the San Diego Padres and Arizona Diamondbacks, as far out of first as they have been all year.
In spite of the game results, it was a challenging one for the LA Dodgers and a motivation for the team to improve and strive for victory.
