A Struggling Night for the LA Dodgers
The Los Angeles Dodgers was unfortunately defeated by the team of San Diego Padres in their exciting match-up at Petco Park. The Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Diego Padres were both scoreless into the eighth inning with the excellent pitching duel between Jason Schmidt of Los Angeles Dodgers and Chris Young of San Diego Padres. Chris Young lowered his ERA to 2.19, allowing three singles in seven shutout innings, striking out five and walking four. Jason Schmidt tossed six innings of one-hit ball, fanning four and walking three in his return to the mound after missing the past 46 games. Jason Schmidt last start was on April 14 against San Diego, when he left after two-plus innings and retired thirteen of his last fourteen batters. In the high 80s and low 90s with his fastball, Jason Schmidt struck out four and walked three. San Diego’s Chris Young pitched seven innings of three-hit ball, striking out five and walking four. Scott Linebrink threw one in the scoreless eighth and Trevor Hoffman pitched the ninth to obtain his 17th save in 19 chances.
The Los Angeles Dodgers had a chance through a running gaffe by Russell Martin in the seventh. He was on first with one out when Tony Abreu laced a single to right. Russell Martin rounded second and headed for third on the play, only to stop and try to get back to second. The San Diego Padres caught him in a rundown and tagged him out while Tony Abreu moved up to second and, after pinch-hitter Wilson Betemit walked, Juan Pierre grounded out to end the inning.
The last time both teams played, the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres went seventeen innings and this game easily could have gone extra innings. Meanwhile, Russell Branyan of San Diego Padres was hit in the foot by a pitch from Rudy Seanez with one out in the eighth, stole second and scored on Giles’ hit to center. In addition, the stolen base was the ninth in Russell Branyan’s ten-year career as well as the first of the season. The San Diego Padres won the game defeating the Los Angeles Dodgers by 1-0 as Marcus Giles singled in the eighth inning and Trevor Hoffman moved within one save of becoming the first big leaguer with 500 for his career. The San Diego Padres defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers to get back first place in the National League West. The wining team had two hits and the losing team had five. The game was witnessed by a 31,703 crowd. The Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Diego Padres had seventeen innings in their last game. The San Diego Padres won for the eighth time in ten games. Dodgers and Padres, tied at 88-74 last year, with the San Diego Padres obtaining the division title because the team won the season series against Los Angeles.
The Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Diego Padres had their best shot for their game in Petco Park. Fans enjoyed the game and both teams had a great time and manifested excellent sportsmanship, courage to win, good teamwork as well as good discipline.
The game was indeed an excellent one for San Diego Padres. Though the Los Angeles Dodgers lost the game, the team was proud that they gave their best shot.
