The fans are eager to know when the Dodgers will decide if they are going to sign Manny Raimirez, according to reporter Ken Gurnick, free agency means the Dodgers don't make that decision. Ramirez makes that decision. Free agency is for the benefit of the player and the player decides when he signs and with whom. The Dodgers can decide whether to pursue a player, how much to offer and for how long.

“According to general manager Ned Colletti, as of Thursday the club had not made those decisions. The club's position seems to hinge mostly on the length of the contract it is willing to commit to a player who will turn 37 next year,” Gurnick stated.

There is no argument that Ramirez can help the Dodgers in 2009. However, Ramirez has hinted at wanting a five- or six-year deal. How much he can help in 2013 and 2014 is a mystery and a risk. Without the designated hitter, it is inconceivable for the Dodgers to commit a huge salary to an everyday player past the age of 40. That would call for a three-year contract. That is why conventional wisdom has Ramirez going to a team in the American League, where he could transition to a designated hitter role as he gets older. But, again, that will be up to Ramirez. The Dodgers have the right to negotiate exclusively with the free-agent player until 15 days after the end of the World Series. However, Ramirez may talk to other clubs during those 15 days, but he officially cannot negotiate salary and can sign only with his current club during that time. The free agent can sign with any team, after the 15 days. The Dodgers have until the 1st of December to offer salary arbitration. The player has until Dec. 7 to accept arbitration (meaning he stays with the current club) or reject it. And if he rejects, the current club will receive compensation if the player ranks as a Type A (as Ramirez will) or Type B free agent and signs elsewhere.

It was also stated in last week's mailbag that the club hasn't given up on Jason Schmidt. The $31.5 million Schmidt received over the last two years is gone and Los Angeles can't do anything about it. But there's still another year left at $15.5 million and if Schmidt can become serviceable or better, you can't expect the team to just release him. There's still five months until Opening Day. Right now, after undergoing a second surgical procedure that he says provided "immediate relief" from arthritic discomfort, Schmidt is doing very well, according to club officials. He has thrown on flat ground and has had no problems. The plan is to decrease the throwing over the next few weeks and resume throwing in the middle of November to get him in line with a normal offseason program. The Dodgers can't count on Schmidt being in the rotation next year, but they haven't written him off either.

The LA Dodgers have to evaluate the performance of their players to be able to know the strength and weakness of the team.
