    Colletti: About Manny Ramirez
    11/06/2008

As of the moment, there has been no contact between the LA Dodgers and the free agent of Manny Ramirez, Scott Boras. This is according to Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti as he gathered with the media in the lobby of a posh resort hotel.

Even the club of the Dodgers has made no offer yet,

"No, despite numerous reports to the contrary," said Colletti, debunking a report that he had offered a two-year, $60 million deal to Ramirez.
Moreover, According to Colletti, other free-agent signings could preclude the Dodgers inking Ramirez later in the offseason. The Dodgers may have to move quickly on other fronts, like trying to sign free-agent left-hander CC Sabathia, who pitched the team of Brewers into the postseason after being acquired from the Indians in July. Colletti said he has yet to speak with Sabathia's agent, Greg Genske.
"You can't let one player stand in the way of everything else you need to do," Colletti said. "We've all been around these things for many years. These things have their own timing to them. Each player has their own timeline and thought process. So you can't hold up the other needs you have to address while somebody makes a decision unless it's a very unique situation. So we'll look to improve the club in the areas we need to improve."

According to Colletti, the signing of a big free-agent depends on who the players are and on the factors that go into it. The salary also is a factor because he doesn’t have an unlimited budget to deal with. For Colletti, it would be difficult if the Dodgers would sign both Ramirez and Sabathia. The Dodgers acquired Ramirez from Boston in a last-minute July 31 non-waiver deadline trade. Ramirez quickly became a fan favorite and had a huge impact on the field, carrying the Dodgers past the D-backs to win the National League West title and as far as Game 5 of the NL Championship Series, where they were eliminated by the eventual World Series-winning Phillies. But before that, Ramirez and the Red Sox had won the World Series twice in four years. Ramirez reportedly is in search of a four-year deal at the minimum with an ideal length of six years. So far, the Yankees have publicly shown guarded interest, and it's possible the Mets could eventually get into the bidding.

"We're going to look at everybody," said Mets general manager Omar Minaya. "It's fair to say that there's certain things we want to address more than others."

In addition to this, the team of Dodgers already have 10 players who have filed for free agency, and that doesn't include two players under contract who also have asked to be traded; these are outfielders Juan Pierre and Andruw Jones, who is still owed $22.1 million of the two-year, $36.2 million contract he signed last offseason. Pierre stands to make $28.5 million more of his five-year, $44 million contract that extends through the 2011 season. As far as Jones is concerned, Colletti was asked if the Dodgers would eat a large amount of what's left on that contract to move him.

"We haven't gotten to that point yet," he said. "We'll see what happens."

However, the Dodgers have had some discussions with third baseman Casey Blake and shortstop Rafael Furcal, who was the last of the 10 to file on Monday, as the team is also interested in signing several of their own free agents.

"We've had discussions with a handful of our free agents and other free agents and the latter was just to say, 'Hey, we have interest. We'll talk to you in a few weeks,'" Colletti said.
"With our own players, they expressed an interest in coming back and an interest in filing and seeing what else they can do."
The team of Dodgers had a $118.5 million payroll this season, second in the National League behind the Mets' $137.8 million, and just ahead of the Cubs at $118.3 million. Moreover, they received Ramirez gratis from the Red Sox, who paid the remaining $7 million on his contract for 2008. Ramirez was in the final guaranteed year of an eight-year, $160 million contract, and Boston held $20 million options for the 2009 and 2010 seasons. The club options were eliminated, as part of the trade, allowing Ramirez to file for free agency last week.

This is indeed a busy moment for Ned Colletti; because the success of the team depends on its players.
