St Louis Cardinals Information
The St. Louis Cardinals is one of the great teams of the Major League Baseball. The team of St. Louis Cardinals, which is based in St. Louis Missouri, is a member of the National League Central Division. The name of the team as Cardinals derived from their new red color scheme during the 1900 season, and that color later on became associated with a bird. It has been said that sportswriter Willie McHale of the St. Louis Republic, heard a lady fan remark “with a lovely shade of cardinal,” the new nickname was then used in his column.
The uniform colors of the team consist of red, white and blue.
The St. Louis Cardinals was first known as the St. Louis Brown Stockings, formed by the year 1882 upon joining the American Association, which is a baseball major league from the year 1882 to the year 1891. The team of the Cardinals as Brown Stockings was successful, gaining their persistent American Association pennant from 1885-1888. During 1892, the Browns joined the National League. In 1898, the owner of the franchise Chris Von der Ahe and his corporation were bankrupt, which led to the purchase of Frank and Stanley (known as the Robinson Brothers). The Robinson Brothers called the team St. Louis Perfectos in 1899. In 1900, the team was officially called the St. Louis Cardinals.
The huge success of the St. Louis Cardinals started to flourish during the 1920s. With a record of 89-65, the team was able to acquire their first National League pennant during the 1926 season. The St. Louis Cardinals advanced to the 1926 World Series, facing the American League’s New York Yankees. Led by second baseman/manager Rogers Hornsby, the Cardinals defeated the Yankees in a seven-game series. During the World Series, the Yankees entered the bottom of the 9th inning trailing 3-2. Babe Ruth walked with two outs, which was his fourth walk, to put the trying run on base. Bob Meusel came to bat next, but Ruth chose to try to steal the 2nd. He was thrown out by catcher Bob O’Farrell’s throw to Rogers Hornsby, ending the 1926 World Series.
The second trip of the St. Louis Cardinals in World Series happened in 1928. Having an excellent record of 95-59, the Cardinals had their second National League pennant and reached the 1928 World Series. Unfortunately, the team of Cardinals was swept by the New York Yankees in four games. Not so long after, the Cardinals made a come back in the World Series by the season of 1930. With a record of 92-62, the Cardinals gained the National League pennant, though losing to the Philadelphia Athletics by four games to two in the 1930 World Series.
The success of the St. Louis Cardinals continued in 1931, as the team won the National League pennant with a record of 101-53. During the 1931 World Series, the Cardinals defeated the Athletics in 7 games with a score of 4-3 and acquired the 1931 World Series title. In 1934, the Cardinals won the National League pennant and successfully defeated the Detroit Tigers by four games to three.
The 1942 season was considered as the best season (so far) in franchise history. The team acquired its best record of 106-48. The Cardinals won over the New York Yankees by 4-1. This success was followed by the 1944 World Series title, with the Cardinals defeating the St. Louis Browns in six games. More successful events came in the way of the Cardinals, in which during the 1946 season, the Cardinals won the National League pennant and defeated the Boston Red Sox in the 1946 World Series. The Cardinals never stopped fighting for victory, as was evident when the team made a come back in the World Series during the 1964 season. The team of Cardinals defeated the Yankees by four games to three in the 1964 World Series.
Furthermore, the Cardinals had a record of 101-60 during the 1967 season that made them acquire the National League pennant and advanced them to the 1967 World Series with the Boston Red Sox as their opponent. The Cardinals won the World Series in 4 games to 3. During the 1982 season, the Cardinals had their National League pennant again with a record of 92-70. The team of Cardinals even won the 1982 World Series against the Milwaukee Brewers by 4-3.
The St. Louis Cardinals reached the top once again in 2006. Having a record of 83-78, the St. Louis Cardinals won the National Championship Series against the New York Mets by four games to three. In the 2006 World Series, the Cardinals was even more successful when they gained the title once again, winning the Series in five games with games 1, 3, 4 and 5.
