In every success of the baseball stars, there’s always been someone behind them that help them improve the talents that they have.

As Reggie Smith talks about hitting and hitters, baseball insiders lean in, listen and learn. Now serving as batting coach for Team USA in its international competitions, Smith has helped shape the approach of some of the game's rising young stars. Rays third baseman Evan Longoria came under Smith's tutelage in the World Cup last November. At the Olympics at Beijing, another young corner infielder -- the Angels of Anaheim’s Matt Brown -- made an impact for the bronze medalists from the United States. With a game-tying three-run homer and a double to launch the decisive rally, Brown figured prominently in the Bronze Medal Game taken by Team USA, 8-4, against Japan; playing first and third base, Brown batted .281 for the Games with a team-high 10 RBIs in nine games.

Brown, a 26-year-old native of Bellevue, Washington, is hoping to muscle his way onto the Angels' 25-man roster in Spring Training after spending most of the 2008 season at Triple-A Salt Lake, dividing his time between first and third base.

"Matt's got what you're looking for in a big league player," Smith said.

"Let me tell you something: Matt's got big-time power,"

"I had a good year," Brown said.

Furthermore, a 10th-round choice by the Angels in the 2001 First-Year Player Draft signed out of Coeur d'Alene (Idaho) High School, Brown also was recalled by the Angels in September, but got only six at-bats. After hitting .320 in the regular season for Salt Lake with 21 homers and 67 RBIs in 97 games, he batted .333 in four postseason games with two homers and four RBIs. In 11 games with the Angels in two brief auditions, Brown had only one hit, a double, in 19 at-bats. Smith would like to see Brown focus on one adjustment at the plate that could make a big difference.

"I'd like to see him pivot a little more and use his lower half," Smith said. Small alterations can make a huge impact.

The Angels of Anaheim has proven through the years that they have the best players and the organization will continue to train players and improve their skills.
