Gary Bennett is one of the outstanding backup catchers in Major League Baseball. Bennett, a 36-year old catcher, was from Waukegan, Illinois. Bennett started working with the team of Philadelphia when he was selected in the 11th round of the 1990 MLB Draft. It was in 1995 when he made his debut for the Phillies versus the team of Reds. By 1997, he was signed as a free agent by the team of Red Sox. He returned to the Philadelphia Phillies the following year as a minor league free agent. Played most of the season with Scranton before his contract was purchased by the Phillies in September. Moreover, in 1998, he had his first full season in the majors and he stayed with the Phillies as a backup catcher to Mike Lieberthal.
In 2001, he was traded for the team of Mets for Todd Pratt. After a month he was traded for the Rockies. Bennett had over 200 at bats in a season with the Rockies. He then became a free agent in 2003 with the Padres, in 2004 with the Brewers, in 2005 with the Nationals and in 2006 with the Cardinals.
By 2007, to back up Dodgers’ young All-star catcher Russell Martin, Bennett was signed by the LA Dodgers to a one-year deal. On the other hand, the 2008 season was not that long for Bennett due to plantar fasciitis of his left foot that brought him to the disable list. He was replaced by Danny Ardon because of the ailment. In ten games played, Bennett posted a record of .190 batting average, one home run and four RBI. His notable season was in 2006, as he hit four home runs in the span of a week, including a walk-off grand slam against the Cubs on August 27, 2006. The four home runs equaled his career high of four home runs in a single season, which he did with the 2002 Rockies.
As Bennett had a rough season in 2008, the LA Dodgers paid a $50,000 buyout instead of exercising a $900,000 option. Moreover, Jeff Kent and Pablo Ozuna are also eligible to file for free agency. Aside from Bennett, the other free agents of the Dodgers are Manny Ramirez, Derek Lowe, Greg Maddux, Rafael Furcal, Casey Blake, Joe Beimel, Nomar Garciaparra, Chan Ho Park, Mark Sweeney as well as Jason Johnson. In addition to this, the team has to decide if the club would exercise the $9.25 million option on pitcher Brad Penny or rather would buy out his contract for $2 million.
The LA Dodgers indeed has a busy offseason as the team continues to evaluate its players. Through the evaluation of its needs, the Dodgers could come up with right decisions in acquiring players to face a new season…a new game plan…a new team.
