The Athletics is a baseball franchise based in Oakland, California, that participates in the Major League. The Athletics are in the Western Division of the American League. Fans of the Athletics affectionately call the team as the A’s. The Athletics had its beginnings as early as 1860, when the Athletic Club of Philadelphia was formed. The amateur team turned professional in 1876, joining the American League. However, the team was ejected from the American League the next year.

In 1901, the Athletics joined the American League as one of its 8 charter franchises as the Philadelphia Athletics. The Athletics hired Connie Mack as its manager. During Its early years as a baseball franchise playing in the American League, the Athletics proved to be among the elite teams, bagging the American League pennant in 1902, 1905, 1910, 1911, 1913, and 1914, for a total of six times. The Philadelphia Athletics also bagged the World Series in 1910, 1911, and 1913, giving fans with Athletics tickets something to celebrate. At the core of the team’s success are John "Stuffy" McInnis, Eddie Collins, Frank "Home Run" Baker, and Jack Barry, as well as pitchers Eddie Plank and Charles "Chief" Bender.  Manager Connie Mack eventually acquired a total of 50 percent of the team’s stocks, making him a full partner to Ben Shibe. The two had an agreement, where Mack will control all matters concerning the baseball side of the team while Shibe would control the business side. The Athletics remained to be a dominant team in the American League until 1914; it went on a slump after the 1914 World Series upset against the Boston Braves.

When Ben Shibe passed away in 1922, his sons took control of his 50 percent of the Athletics. The Athletics continued to struggle until 1925, and traveled full circle to be a contending team in 1927, by finishing second to the New York Yankees. The Athletics replicated this feat in 1928, again finishing second to the Yankees. The A’s then went on to grab the American League pennant for three consecutive years from 1929 to 1931, boosting Athletics tickets sales. The Philadelphia-based team also won the World Series in 1929 and 1930.  Connie Mack eventually gained total control of the franchise in 1936, when Shibe’s last son passed away. Connie Mack continued to be the Athletics’ manager until after the 1950 season, posting a 50-year managing career that is second to none.

Ownership of the Athletics eventually changed hands in 1954, when Mack sold the Athletics to the Chicago businessman Arnold Johnson. Johnson then proceeded to move the franchise to Kansas City. It was during his time that the franchise posted a whooping season attendance of 1,393,054. These franchise supporters with Athletics tickets where fuelled to do so because of Johnson’s plan to eventually move the franchise, using an escape clause in the team’s lease to the Kansas City Municipal Stadium, which stated the option to void the lease of the Stadium if it  failed to draw a minimum attendance of 1 million per season.

Johnson held ownership of the Athletics until he passed away in 1960 due to a cerebral hemorrhage. His franchise was then bought by Charles O. Finley, whom Johnson outbid in 1954. The purchase took place on the 19th of December, 1960. Finley changed the official name of the franchise from the Athletics to the A’s. He also laid the groundwork for the A’s farm system. However, success remained elusive for the Athletics. The franchise eventually moved to Oakland in 1968.

The A’s started to pick up their pace in 1970, and finished second in the American League West Division. The A’s then proceeded to face the Baltimore Orioles in 1971 for the American League pennant, but was swept 3-0. Fans with Athletics tickets were brought to the World Series in 1972, with the A’s facing the Cincinnati Reds. The A’s achieved victory in 4-3 series. The A’s defended their World Series title in 1973 and 1974 against the New York Mets and Los Angeles Dodgers. The A’s defeated the Mets in a 4-3 series in 1973, while they won over the Dodgers in a 4-1 series in 1974. At the core of their third dynasty were players such as Reggie Jackson, Sal Bando, Joe Rudi, Bert Campaneris, Catfish Hunter, Rollie Fingers, and Vida Blue.

The Oakland Athletics play their home games at the McAfee Coliseum. The McAfee Coliseum has hosted the Athletics since 1968. It can accommodate a total of 34,077 baseball fans with Athletics tickets .

The Athletics is currently owned by real estate developer Lewis Wolff, who acquired the franchise on the 30th of March, 2005. Wolff’s group bought the franchise from San Francisco Bay Area real estate developer Steve Schott.
