Another Hunter’s Success

Torii Hunter has proven that he is one of the remarkable players in Major League Baseball. Hunter won his eighth consecutive Rawlings Gold Glove due to his outstanding performances. Hunter won his first Gold Glove Award in 2001.

The winners of the Gold Glove were chosen by managers as well as by coaches from each American League team. However, they are not allowed to vote for their own players. Aside from Hunter, the players who received Gold Glove were pitcher third baseman Adrian Beltre of Mariners, Mike Mussina of Yankees, catcher Joe Mauer of Twins, first baseman Carlos Pena of Rays, second baseman Dustin Pedroia of the Red Sox, outfielder Grady Sizemore of the Indians and shortstop Michael Young of the Rangers.

From April through September, Hunter was exceptional in the field. He did not commit a regular-season error while playing 137 games and handling 354 total chances. By 2007, Hunter hit three grand slams; April 17 in Seattle, May 18 in Milwaukee, and August 15 again in Seattle.

Hunter started with the Angels of Anaheim in 2008, as he turned down a three-year deal with the Twins. Since August of 2007, Hunter has not been charged with an error. However, he did make an error in the American League Division Series against Boston when he mishandled a line drive by Mark Kotsay. Hunter excelled in the ALDS, batting .389 with five RBIs as the Angels were failing to Red Sox in four games.

"Even though the season didn't end the way we wanted -- I'm still not happy about that -- it was a good year overall," Hunter said. "We accomplished a lot of good things, winning 100 games, getting into the postseason. We just need to take it to the next level now."

According to Hunter, he takes a lot of pride in his defense. Hunter believes that concentration is really needed. Hunter managed the human control tower in center, keeping things in order. According to Mike Scioscia, Hunter solidified the Angels’ defense and was the leader in the outfield, playing with great offense and defense.

During late August, he stole home runs from Rangers hitters with spectacular plays in consecutive games at home. He went face-first into the wall, jarring his senses, to rob Marlon Byrd, and came back the following night to bang the back of his head against the wall while taking one away from Hank Blalock.

"Torii is a great player," Blalock said in the August 30 game after the Angels had prevailed, 4-3. "He comes up with big-time plays in big-time situations. We've just got to hit it a little harder when he's out there. He almost makes it routine."

The Angels of Anaheim is proud to have Torii Hunter. Hunter and the Angels continue to prove that Angels is a team, a home for great players.
