    Angels 6, Mets 1
    6/21/2008

The game of the Angels of Anaheim versus NY Mets was indeed a successful one especially for the Angels. It was held at the Angel Stadium and attended by a crowd of 40,122 supporters on a Tuesday night.

The team of Angels responded with three in their half, after New York scratched out a run in the first inning. Moreover, Torii Hunter doubled home a pair of runs with two outs against his former Minnesota Twins teammate and scored from second on a fielding error by first baseman Carlos Delgado. Also with two outs, Casey Kotchman singled home another run for Los Angeles in the third. However, Jeff Mathis' solo home run in the sixth inning made the gap 5-1, and the Angels tacked on another run in the eighth inning.

“There were a lot of positives for us,”
    Angels manager Mike Scioscia stated.
“Getting (five) runs off Santana, we had some good situational hitting. And to get a performance from John Lackey like we did.”

On the other hand, according to Marlon Anderson of the team of Mets it certainly wasn't a routine day in the clubhouse.

“Today's been a mess and it's going to be a mess all day. You can't clean it up because of all the media coverage, the fact that everybody's talking about it and he's gone,”
He was not blaming the distractions for the loss, after the game, instead pointing to Lackey.
“John Lackey's got a 1.92 ERA and he shut us down,” said Anderson. “He changed his speeds real good on his curve ball. He threw two different curve balls and a curve down and in to the lefties. He did what he's pretty much been doing all year.”
Moreover, Lackey, asked if he saw a good opportunity to go after the Mets because of the distractions, said:
“I see a good opportunity to go after everybody every start.”
Scot Shields pitched 1 1-3 hitless innings to earn his second save.

Meanwhile, Jerry Manuel, late the previous night, was asked to replace his good friend and jogging partner, Willie Randolph, as the manager of New York Mets. Although the NY Mets was defeated by John Lackey and the Angels of Anaheim by 6-1 Tuesday to spoil his debut, Manuel and the Mets players believed they will turn things around.

“Hopefully now that the cloud has lifted, we can get back to playing baseball. We've got a good team,”
said Manuel. In addition, the team of New York looked worn out, managing only six singles and making three errors on the way to their eighth loss in 12 games.
“We played poor baseball defensively and we didn't hit very well. But sometimes good pitching can make you look that way, too. We looked very tired. I know I was tired. Maybe they were going through what I was going through,”
Manuel said, who was let go by the White Sox following the 2003 season after six years as their manager, noted something Minaya talked about the process of dismissing Randolph. According to the general manager, he waited for Randolph to get to the team hotel after Monday's game because he thought it would be disrespectful to fire him while he was in uniform. Manuel walked away and cracked a joke, after addressing a swarm of reporters outside the clubhouse door following his first game in his new job:
“I made it through. I'm going to have to sleep in this uniform, though.”
Furthermore, even ace Johan Santana couldn't help Manuel get off to a winning start. On the other hand, Ervin Santana gave up five runs, four earned, and eight hits and two walks in six innings. John Lackey held the Mets to one run and six hits in 7 2-3 innings. Santana still saw good signs from the Mets, who are 6 1/2 games behind Philadelphia in the NL East.

It was a thrilling game, the Angels of Anaheim will continue winning their games and will prove that they are indeed an outstanding team of MLB.
