    Angels 2, White Sox 10
    9/12/2008

It was a disappointing game for the Angels of Anaheim that was held on a Friday night at the U.S. Cellular Field.

The team of White Sox showed Friday night how they plan to make up for the losses of Carlos Quentin and Joe Crede - with a group effort. Juan Uribe hit a pair of homers, Paul Konerko added another and Mark Buehrle pitched six shutout innings as Chicago defeated the Angels of Anaheim 10-2 with a 15-hit attack. The Angels started the night with a magic number of six for clinching the AL West. The White Sox maintained their 1 1/2-game lead over Minnesota in the AL Central.

"All these guys know they have to step it up to protect what we are missing," manager Ozzie Guillen said. "They know Quentin is missing, but they swung the bats well."

AL home run leader Carlos Quentin will have surgery on his fractured right wrist Monday, an injury he got earlier this week in Cleveland when - in frustration after fouling off a pitch - he hit the bat with his right hand. And Crede, who underwent back surgery last season, has been bothered by soreness and could seek a second opinion. It's possible neither will play the rest of the season as the White Sox try to make the playoffs.

"Everybody knows obviously it was kind of a freak accident," Buehrle said of Quentin's injury. "(If) you are going to sit there and say, `Oh there goes our chances, we're not going to go to the playoffs now,' it isn't going to get you anywhere."
Buehrle allowed only three hits with two walks and seven strikeouts to win for the fourth time in his last five decisions.

The White Sox got a fortunate bounce in the first as Konerko's topped roller up the third base line hit the grass in foul territory and unexpectedly angled fair, giving the slow Chicago first baseman an infield single to load the bases with two outs. Ken Griffey Jr. followed with a two-run single off Dustin Moseley (1-4), who gave up six hits and four runs in 1 1-3 innings. Moseley got the start in place of Jered Weaver, who cut some fingers in the dugout in Detroit earlier this week and had his next outing pushed back to Monday.

"I think everybody at this time is going to feel some injuries," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "We certainly are. The White Sox certainly are. You have to get after it and play baseball. They have a deep offensive lineup.'”

Uribe hit his first two-run homer in the second inning and after A.J. Pierzynski and Jermaine Dye hit back-to-back singles in the same inning, Scioscia had seen enough and yanked Moseley, bringing in Darren Oliver. Oliver gave up a solo shot to Konerko leading off the third and after a two-out walk to Nick Swisher, Uribe lined his second of the game and seventh of the season into the left-field bullpen.

"I think he's one of the heart-and-soul guys of this team," Buehrle said, describing Uribe, who played well defensively when Crede was on the DL earlier this season. "We were kind of joking around before the game, `Hey do something, Buehrle is pitching.' And he's like `My brother, my brother, I'll pick him up.' He picked me up all right," Buehrle added.

Meanwhile, Alexei Ramirez hit a two-run single in the sixth inning after a strange play featuring a towering popup from Griffey. With runners at first and second and one out, Griffey's popup landed fair just in front of the plate. Even though the Angels threw to third and second hoping to get a double play, the umpires conferred and ruled Griffey out on an infield fly rule, meaning the runners had to be tagged. Left fielder DeWayne Wise, who came off the White Sox's disabled list Friday, mishandled Chone Figgins' single in the seventh for an error, allowing the Angels' first run to score. Garret Anderson then followed with an RBI single before Dye made a great diving catch in right center to rob Mark Teixeira of extra bases.

"We were on the brink of getting back into the game," Scioscia said. "And he kind of ended that rally."

The Angels of Anaheim was challenged in this game. The team will continue to fight for victory.
