Los Angeles Angels Information
Angels' Other Options
The Angels of Anaheim thought twice that they had deals in place to acquire Marlins slugger Miguel Cabrera, only to watch Florida reconsider and rearrange its demands, according to owner Arte Moreno. The talks continued into the Winter Meetings, right up until the proceedings were rocked on Tuesday by the disclosure that the Tigers had landed not just Cabrera but also Dontrelle Willis in exchange for six players.
Angels general manager Tony Reagins, after hearing the reports, concluded that the Marlins “needs didn't match up” with what his team was offering. “I think they thought they had a better deal than what they could accomplish” with the team, he said. “... Congrats to those two clubs. We had interest in trying to do something along those lines, but it takes two teams to get a deal done -- and ours wasn't a fit.”
Moreover, the team of Marlins did not come to the Angels on Tuesday, Tony Reagins said, to see if they would ante up for Miguel Cabrera before wrapping up the deal with Detroit. The general manager would not say if Dontrelle Willis, the top player of Florida, ever surfaced in their talks with the team of Marlins. “I did not have any contact with them today,” said Reagins, adding that the Marlins “did not ask me last night. We feel we made offers that were competitive offers. It takes two teams to get something done.”
The Angels of Anaheim never confirmed or denied names involved in the talks with Florida but reportedly were offering more proven Major League talent, notably second baseman Howie Kendrick. Other names that surfaced from Anaheim’s end included catcher Jeff Mathis, infielder Maicer Izturis, outfielder Reggie Willits, and pitchers Ervin Santana and Nick Adenhart. All but Nick Adenhart have proven themselves as Major League players. The team of Marlins reportedly was seeking a combination of four players; two pitchers and two position players.
On the other hand, the Angels of Anaheim, who have added seven-time Gold Glove center fielder Torii Hunter and two-time 18-game winner Jon Garland to the cast of the American League West champions, will continue to explore the market, according to Tony Reagins. He also said that they did not enter the Johan Santana sweepstakes with Minnesota as reported on Tuesday. “We'll keep making phone calls and talking with other clubs to see if we can improve,” said Reagins. “This really has no bearing as to how we're going to move forward. We like our club. We know we have a good club right now. We're going to compete for years to come. What I would say to Angels fans is to hang in there and keep supporting us, because we feel we're on the right track.”
The general manager of Angels of Anaheim believes that the team will have other options for acquiring great players. Besides, over the past years, the team proved that they indeed have the best ones. This team will continue to train its players to be able to win their games and get themselves really ready for the upcoming season of MLB.
