Los Angeles Angels Information
Reagins not Revealing Some of his Plans
Tony Reagins has plans for the Angels of Anaheim that he could not disclose especially to the media. If the Angels are close to pulling off a blockbuster deal for Florida's Miguel Cabrera; or Baltimore's Miguel Tejada, for that matter, there were no tells or signs from the new general manager on Monday night when he met with the media at the Gaylord Opryland Resort & Convention Center.
Certainly, there were no warnings or indications in the hours before they sent shortstop Orlando Cabrera to the White Sox for starter Jon Garland or signed free agent Torii Hunter to a five-year deal. “We got in today at about 3 [p.m.] and had a chance to make a couple phone calls -- and a couple clubs have called me,” said Reagins, stopping short of identifying club representatives on the other end of the line. He added that he planned to talk to another team tonight, see what they have to say.
According to Tony Reagins, he has imposed no timetables and is not trying to get one deal (Miguel Cabrera) resolved, one way or another, before moving on to other business (Tejada or Minnesota left-hander Johan Santana, a long shot). “Right now we're looking at opportunities to make us better -- whether it be Plan A, Plan B, whatever. Right now, we like the team we have.”
In addition, a surplus of quality outfielders, seven with Major League experience, has created the perception that the Angels are shopping Gary Matthews Jr., Reggie Willits, Juan Rivera and Nathan Haynes. “We're pretty deep both in the outfield and pitching-wise,” said Reagins. “We've had a few calls with regard to those positions. We like the outfield as it stands. We've had a chance to speak with Vladdy [Guerrero] and Garret [Anderson] and Gary Matthews, and we think there are going to be enough outfield at-bats [along with designated hitter at-bats] for everybody. We think it's going to be invaluable in '08.”
Tony Reagins, while declining to address any specific players in any rumored deals, did say that the Angels of Anaheim at this time are not pursuing any free agents. “We're happy with what we have right now and don't see a fit or need in that area,” he said. “If something comes up that makes sense, we'll look at that.”
Furthermore, club owner Arte Moreno recently said that the team thought they had deals done for Cabrera twice, only to have the Marlins pull back and make new demands. Tony Reagins gave no indication that the two sides are close to a deal. Second baseman Howie Kendrick is believed to be pivotal in any talks with Florida. “If it makes sense, we would look at it,” said Reagins when asked about Kendrick's availability.
Florida has needs the Angels can fill at catcher with Jeff Mathis and in center field with Reggie Willits. Florida insists on young pitching in any major deal and seems to have zeroed in on Ervin Santana and Nick Adenhart, with southpaw Joe Saunders also a possibility. Adenhart is considered the jewel of the farm system along with shortstop/third baseman Brandon Wood. Santana had a subpar 2007 season after going 16-8 in ‘06, leading the staff in wins. Saunders is 15-8 with a 4.71 ERA in 33 career starts. The Angels have been reluctant in the past to unload their premium young pitchers, allowing the likes of John Lackey, Joe Saunders, Jered Weaver and Santana to blossom. Whether that will change now with Cabrera as the lure remains to be seen. The Dodgers frequently have been mentioned as possible trade partners with the Marlins, with the White Sox and Giants also expressing interest in Cabrera, a four-time All-Star at age 24. “You never can have enough pitching,” said Reagins. “Injuries happen. We've seen it happen the last few years. Depth is important in that area. You win with pitching and defense. That's something we tried to address with the acquisitions of Jon Garland and Torii Hunter.”
They also got offense with Torii Hunter, who delivered a total of 59 homers and 205 RBIs the past two seasons for the Twins. The Angels finished fourth in the American League in runs scored last year with injuries sidelining every regular except Orlando Cabrera and Guerrero for chunks of the season. Tony Reagins met with Guerrero in Miami during a trip to the Dominican Republic with Moreno, manager Mike Scioscia and consultant Bill Stoneman, his predecessor as general manager. According to Reagins, Guerrero looks terrific and feels great, after ending the season with multiple injuries, notably in the left shoulder. They did not discuss a contract extension, but Reagins said the club would look into that if his representatives want to open it. Meanwhile, the Angels will be weighing how much they can afford to subtract in order to add another slugging partner for Guerrero.
Witness the fantastic games of the Angels of Anaheim on the upcoming season of MLB.
