Los Angeles Angels Information
Angels Felt Disappointed
As the MLB teams get ready for the next season, the Angels of Anaheim also prepares by evaluating its players and planning the acquisition of new Angels. In fact, as the team was glad to introduce new acquisitions Torii Hunter and Jon Garland on Wednesday, there was some disappointment that one other player had yet to be presented despite the team being very close to obtaining him more than once this month.
Arte Moreno, the Angels owner, thought the team would have already been able to show off the object of their desire, Marlins third baseman Miguel Cabrera. However, their offers have been rebuffed by Florida. “We felt we had a deal with them twice,” said Moreno. “They came back and asked for more. They're doing it to everybody. The Dodgers, I think (General Manager Ned) Colletti thought he had a deal, and it changed on them. I think they've maneuvered us against each other.”
Moreover, the Angels of Anaheim seem to be willing to part with some of the players Florida wants in return for Miguel Cabrera, who hit .320 with 34 homers and 119 RBI last season, but not in the same deal. The Marlins want Howie Kendrick, who hit .322 in 88 games last year, as the centerpiece of any Angels’ package with some combination of Jeff Mathis, Ervin Santana, Joe Saunders, Jered Weaver, Reggie Willits and top prospects Brandon Wood and Nick Adenhart. “They're looking for four guys, three major league players, two of them pitchers,” said Moreno. “If you're going to give up three major leaguers and a minor league pitcher, or two major leaguers and two pitchers, it's really going to be hard to give up the talent.” He also noted Miguel Cabrera, who won't become a free agent until after the 2009 season but will make more than $11 million in 2008 and 2009 due to arbitration, would inflate a projected $125 million payroll that he said is already over budget. “Everybody makes a budget. It's my call whether we exceed it,” said Moreno. “If you're doing something for the short term, a Band-Aid, to me, it's not worth going over the budget. If you think it's going to make your business better in the long term, then you make the investment. We don't want a Band-Aid.”
But according to Arte Moreno, he would forfeit making money in order to win a title. “Yeah, if I need to,” he stated. “It would be short term.”
Furthermore, it appears the team could have saved some on Torii Hunter, who agreed to a five-year, $90 million deal last week with a $2.5 million signing bonus and will pay him $16 million this season, $17.5 million in 2009 and $18 million in each of the final three years. The deal includes a no-trade clause. Already having fielded five-year offers in the $70 million range from three other clubs, according to Torii Hunter, he would have accepted something in that range to come to the team he deemed his first choice. “Yeah, I would have (taken) it,” exclaimed Torii Hunter, who batted .287 with 28 homers and 107 RBI last season. “Arte, he doesn't want to negotiate. It's like 'Wham, take it or leave it.' I was like 'Whoa, that's nice.' They gave me 24 hours, and I gave them five. There was really no thinking because that's the team I wanted to be with. I just didn't think they needed me.”
As the team heads to the winter meetings next week, it’s unlikely the Angels of Anaheim are finished dealing. They have reportedly inquired about Baltimore shortstop Miguel Tejada and Minnesota pitcher Johan Santana. The Angels had a deal in place for Tejada at the 2006 trading deadline, but Orioles ownership nixed it. Santana is being shopped because the Twins have concluded they can't sign him when he becomes a free agent after next season. As John Lackey said, “We do have a stockpile at a certain position. It makes you wonder if there's more to come.” He was referring to the outfield, where the team now has seven players who spent at least a month of the season in the majors, although he could just as easily have been talking about a rotation that boasts six capable major league starters. “As we approach the winter meetings, I think Tony (Reagins, GM) is in a good position of strength,” Manager Mike Scioscia stated.
The Angels of Anaheim will continue to be one of the outstanding teams and they will continue to prove it in the upcoming season of MLB.
