Los Angeles Angels Information

Their Days of Standing Pat are Over

Tony Reagins, who is responsible for overseeing the Angel farm system, with seven affiliates that include a Dominican Summer League club and developmental academy in San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic, made a loud statement on Monday. He is not Bill Stoneman. In only his second month on the job, as the new general manager of the Angels of Anaheim, Reagins made a significant deal that could be the link to a larger trade. The team sent Gold Glove shortstop Orlando Cabrera to the Chicago White Sox for right-hander Jon Garland.

The trade positioned the team to make a run at Baltimore shortstop Miguel Tejada. It kept with Tony Reagins' vow to be aggressive. Bill Stoneman, the Angels’ general manager for the previous eight seasons, was effective in many ways but had a quirk when it came to trades. He generally avoided them. He made a big deal just five months into the job, sending center fielder Jim Edmonds to St. Louis for second baseman Adam Kennedy and right-hander Kent Bottenfield. The team of Cardinals got the better player, and Stoneman never made a trade approaching that roll-the-dice magnitude for the remainder of his tenure. In Jon Garland, the team gets a dependable mid-rotation starter. He has worked more than 205 innings in four consecutive seasons and made at least 32 starts in six consecutive starts. He also puts Tony Reagins in a position of strength.

The Angels of Anaheim, at least for the moment, have six established starting pitchers, with Garland joining right-handers Kelvim Escobar, John Lackey, Ervin Santana and Jered Weaver and lefthander Joe Saunders. Lackey, Weaver and Escobar are not going anywhere, but any of the other three could bring a good return. Orioles president of baseball operations Andy MacPhail is beginning a renovation project and would like to increase his flexibility by dumping Miguel Tejada, owed $26 million for the final two years of his contract. That's tip money to Angels owner Arte Moreno, who was willing to get involved on Alex Rodriguez had he remained a free agent. In addition, Tejada could fill the Angels hole at shortstop and give the lineup the big bat it lacked for the final years of the Bill Stoneman administration. And it was not what Alex Rodriguez call a magical season. It should be culminated with his third career American League Most Valuable Player award. Rodriguez has an interesting definition of magical.

A-Rod did lead the majors in home runs with 54 and RBIs with 156. He also flopped again in the playoffs, driving in one run during a division-series loss to Cleveland, and took a public-relations beating by going along with agent Scott Boras on the disastrous decision to make it known during Game 4 of the World Series that he would opt out of his contract with the Yankees. Rodriguez will return next season to the Yankees, who failed to take advantage of their leverage in negotiations on a new contract. Another magical season and A-Rod will become only the 34th player in history with more than 2,000 regular-season games and no World Series appearance. However, Rafael Palmeiro is the all-time leader with 2,831 games and no World Series. Rodriguez has 1,904 career games. “There's a huge hole in the resume,” said A-Rod. “I would trade all three (MVPs) for one world championship and wouldn't think twice about it. That's the reason I have unfinished business in New York.”

On the other hand, if the Angels of Anaheim do not deal for Miguel Tejada, they likely will stay in-house and go with Erick Aybar at shortstop. There is little sentiment within the organization to bring back free-agent shortstop David Eckstein, part of the 2002 World Series winner. Eckstein is finding minimal interest on the open market. The Mets considered signing Eckstein with the intention of moving him to second but decided to bring back Luis Castillo.

The players deserve to be in the right team where their skills will be improved through the training and practices. After all, they have the same goal, and that is to win their games in MLB.
