Guerrero, a Silver Slugger Awardee
Through the years, Vladimir Alvino Guerrero has been one of the most outstanding players in the professional baseball field. He made his major league debut on 1996. The Angels of Anaheim takes pride of having outfielder Vladimir Guerrero, who hit .324 with 27 home runs and 125 RBI this past season, as he was named a recipient of the 2007 Louisville Slugger Silver Slugger Award which is given to the best offensive players at each position in both the American and National Leagues. The award is in fact his fourth consecutive honor with the Angels and seventh such award in his career. The team has now had a Silver Slugger honoree in each of the past eight seasons.
Vladimir Guerrero batted over .300 with 25-or-more home runs for the 10th straight season and only Lou Gehrig has more consecutive campaigns with 11. He joins Alex Rodriguez and Andruw Jones as the only active players with ten consecutive seasons with at least 25 homers (1998-2007). Guerrero, who finished in the Top 10 in the AL in 14 major offensive categories, ranked eighth (and second among outfielders) in batting average and tied for fourth with a career-best 24 doubles. In addition, he is one of four players in major league history to hit .300 with 30 home runs and 100 RBI in a season in both leagues (Dick Allen, Carlos Delgado and Frank Robinson). Guerrero was selected by the fans to start for the American League in the All-Star Game for the third straight season, appearing for his eighth time overall. He became the third Angel (joining Garret Anderson in 2003 and Wally Joyner in 1986) to win the All-Star Home Run Derby.
Furthermore, the Silver Slugger award, which is presented by Louisville Slugger, is voted on by managers and coaches from each league. Selections are based on a combination of offensive statistics for the 2007 season and general impressions of the overall offensive value of the player. In addition to this, managers and coaches could not vote for players from their own team.
The winners of 2007 Silver Slugger Award for the American League division are composed of Carlos Pena of Tampa Bay Devil Rays, Placido Polanco of Detroit Tigers, Alex Rodriguez of New York Yankees, Derek Jeter of New York Yankees, Magglio Ordonez of Detroit Tigers, Vladimir Guerrero of Angels of Anaheim, Ichiro Suzuki of Seattle Mariners, Jorge Posada of New York Yankees and David Ortiz of Boston Red Sox. On the other hand, the winners from the National League are Prince Fielder of Milwaukee Brewers, Chase Utley of Philadelphia Phillies, David Wright of New York Mets, Jimmy Rollins of Philadelphia Phillies, Carlos Beltran of New York Mets, Carlos Lee of Houston Astros, Matt Holliday of Colorado Rockies, Russell Martin of LA Dodgers and Micah Owings of Arizona Diamondbacks.
