Los Angeles Angels Information
Angels' Free-agency
Bartolo Colon is a skilled starting pitcher of Angels of Anaheim. Aside from him, who has filed for free agency, all is relatively quiet with the Angels with respect to free agency.
Bartolo Colon is a Cy Young Award-winning starting pitcher, whose 2007 season started and ended with injury issues, is not likely to be retained. The Angels feel they have youthful depth in the starting rotation with Ervin Santana, Joe Saunders as well as Dustin Moseley behind their big three of John Lackey, Jered Weaver and Kelvim Escobar. “I think right now, Bart is trying to get healthy,” said manager Mike Scioscia, withholding comment on the degree of management's interest in the 2005 American League Cy Young Award winner. “That would be a financial issue. Once Bart gets healthy, he certainly has the ability to pitch well in the Major Leagues. First, he has to get healthy.”
Moreover, Bartolo Colon started the 2007 season on the 15-day disabled list, having spent Spring Training recovering from a tear in his rotator cuff that limited him to 10 starts, a 1-5 record and a 5.11 ERA in 2006. Colon had gone 21-8 with a 3.48 ERA during his 2005 Cy Young campaign for the team of Angels.
Bartolo Colon looked like the guy who had been one of the game's most respected starters for a decade, joining the club on April 21 after three Minor League assignments. He won his first five decisions for the first time in his career, featuring a season-high 11 strikeouts against Tampa Bay on April 26. But he began experiencing elbow problems and returned to the DL on July 24, returning on the 9th of September. He never regained his early form, going 0-4 in the second half with a 6.44 ERA in five games to finish the season 6-8 with a 6.34 ERA in 19 games. Opponents batted .320 against him across 99 1/3 innings, a fastball that once sat in the 96- to 98-mph range no longer a dominant weapon in the low 90s.
In addition, Bartolo Colon made his first relief appearance since his rookie year in 1997 with Cleveland, striking out two of the three men he faced on the 29th of September at Oakland. Among the milestones he reached were 1,900 career innings and 1,500 strikeouts. Bartolo Colon is 146-95 with a 4.10 ERA in 309 career games, 306 as a starter.
On the other hand, Ervin Santana struggled badly and eventually lost his spot in the rotation to Joe Saunders, finishing the season 7-14 with a 5.76 ERA in 28 games, 26 as a starter. The Angels of Anaheim are confident that Santana can regain the form that led him to a 12-8 record and a 4.65 ERA as a rookie in 2005, which was followed by an even better sophomore season (16-8, 4.28 ERA) in 2006. Joe Saunders went 8-5 with a 4.44 ERA in 18 outings, giving him a 15-8 record and 4.71 ERA in 33 career starts, the equivalent of a full season. The 26-year-old Virginian offers some balance as the club's lone left-handed starting option.
Furthermore, Dustin Moseley showed promise in limited starting opportunities while excelling in middle relief. He went 4-3 with a 4.40 ERA in 46 games, starting eight times with a 1-1 record and 4.20 ERA. Bartolo Colon is the only player from the 2007 club qualified for free agency.
The players of Angels of Anaheim are indeed talented. Witness their outstanding skills through their games, this upcoming season!
