Los Angeles Angels Information
Angels Agreed to Terms
Every team needs coaches who will guide them on how to improve their skills and be a best player. Ever since the Angels of Anaheim was born, the team possessed great coaches even if they change through the seasons.
It was announced Thursday that the club has reached agreements with bench coach Ron Roenicke, pitching coach Mike Butcher, first base coach Alfredo Griffin, third base coach Dino Ebel, bullpen coach Orlando Mercado, bullpen catcher Steve Soliz as well as hitting coach Mickey Hatcher on multi-year contract extensions in an announcement by club General Manager Tony Reagins. Per club policy, no other terms of the contracts will be available.
Ron Roenicke finished his eighth season with the team of Angels and second as bench coach. The 51 year-old Roenicke joined the team in 2000 as the club's third base coach. Ron Roenicke previously served as the manager of the Fresno Grizzlies, which is San Francisco's triple-A affiliate, in 1999. Mike Butcher will return for his second season as the team’s pitching coach. Prior to his current position, this 42 year-old coach spent the 2006 season as the Tampa Bay pitching coach. Butcher served six seasons in the Angels' minor league system as roving pitching coach (2003-05) or minor league pitching coach (2000-02), before joining the team of Devil Rays.
Moreover, Alfredo Griffin will return for his ninth season as the Angels of Anaheim’s first base coach. An 18-year major league infielder, this 50 year-old coach began his major league coaching career as the first base coach for the Toronto Blue Jays from year 1996 to year 1997.
On the other hand, Dino Ebel concluded his third season in the team’s organization and second as third base coach. This 41 year-old coach spent the 2005 season as manager of the Angels' triple-A affiliate Salt Lake. Ebel spent the previous 17 seasons with the Dodgers as a minor league player, coach and manager. Orlando Mercado will return for his 15th season in the team's organization and sixth as bullpen coach. Prior to his current position, this 45 year-old coach spent three seasons as the club's bullpen catcher and five seasons as a minor league coach within the organization. Steve Soliz from Ventura, California, will start his sixth season as the club's bullpen catcher. This 36 year-old catcher spent eight professional seasons as catcher with Cleveland (1993- 99) and San Diego (2000-01) teams. He had .236 batting average (345/1463) with 168 runs scored, 62 doubles, 3 triples, 13 home runs and 144 RBI in 473 minor league games. Soliz was originally selected by Indians in 13th round of 1993 free agent draft. Elbow injury sidelined him in 2001 and eventually ended his playing career. In addition, he played four seasons at California State Los Angeles, earning third team All-American and team MVP honors by 1993. He also assists Angels Community Relations during the season with various youth baseball clinics and community appearances.
Finally, Mickey Hatcher will start his ninth season as the Angels’ hitting coach. Under this 52 year-old hitting coach, the 2004 Angels finished tied for highest club batting average in the American League (.282, with Boston) and highest in club history (also 1979 and 2002).
The Angels of Anaheim will continue to acquire outstanding coaches as well as players. Through the years they also have proven that they got the best coaches. You can witness it by attending their excellent games! Watch out for the fantastic team and their coaches for the upcoming season!
