Los Angeles Angels Information
Angels' Announcement on Chris Resop
It was announced Thursday by the team of Angels of Anaheim that right-handed pitcher Chris Resop was claimed off outright waivers by the Atlanta Braves. The announcement was made by Angels General Manager Tony Reagins.
Chris Resop, split the 2007 season between triple-A Salt Lake and the Angels. He was 1-3 with a 4.57 ERA (45.1 IP - 23 ER) in 27 relief appearances with Salt Lake. Chris Resop allowed 50 hits (4 HR), walked 16 and struck out 39 in that span. He was recalled by the Angels team July 3 and posted a 0-0 record and 4.15 ERA (4.1 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 HR, 1 BB, 2 SO) in four games. Resop was placed on the 15-day disabled list July 13 (retroactive to July 9) due to bone spur surgery on his right elbow and remained on the disabled list the rest of the season.
Chris Resop was acquired by the Angels team from Florida, 20th of November, 2006 in exchange for right-handed pitcher Kevin Gregg. He owns a lifetime 3-2 record and 5.48 ERA (42.2 IP - 26 ER) in 41 games. Resop has appeared in the Major Leagues with the Marlins by 2005-2006 and the Angels by 2007.
Chris Resop, a native of Naples, Forida, was originally selected by team of Florida in the fourth round of the 2001 free agent draft.
It is the time of year when disabled lists go away, so clubs have to either put an injured player on the 40-man roster, release him, or try to pass him through waivers so he can go on the Triple-A roster. And that is how the Angels lost Chris Resop. A natural part of the game, these rules were drawn up long ago to make sure that one organization does not bury a player forever. For instance, to make room for Chris Resop on their 40-man roster, the Braves designated for assignment Chad Paronto. He might get claimed by another organization as well. This procedure is how the Angels of Anaheim team over the years lost players like Bobby Jenks, Derrick Turnbow and Joel Peralta. A front office has to weigh the risk of protecting one player forever versus protecting one of the minor leaguers who must also be protected. The rules require that a minor leaguer go on the 40-man roster after three full seasons, four if he was signed out of high school or a foreign sign, or else he must be exposed to the Rule 5 Draft in December.
Some people complain endlessly on the Angels boards about losing Bobby Jenks and Derrick Turnbow, but both had crippled arms requiring screws to put them back together, and neither had particularly impressive careers at the point they were waived. Jenks had many disciplinary problems and didn't give a darn about his physical condition as well. Going to another organization seemed to wake him up to the reality that he could lose his career if he was not more responsible.
Regardless of what some people falsely claim on fan boards, being waived does not mean a player has been released. He goes on the Triple-A roster, if he passes through waivers. If a team does lose a player to waivers, they receive cash in compensation, something like $30,000 give or take a few thousand.
Furthermore, Chris Resop was acquired last winter from Florida for Kevin Gregg. His fastball was in the mid-to-high 90s but his mechanics were messed up, as he was converted a few years ago from the outfield. After making a significant improvement in Salt Lake, Resop was called up to Anaheim mid-season, only to be shelved due to a sore
elbow. He had surgery to remove bone chips and was expected to report next spring ready to go.
Expectantly Chris Resop has a long and productive career. However, the Angels of Anaheim as a team, will continue to work together to be able to achieve their common goal; to win their games in MLB.
