Angels might make play for Rodriguez

According to the new general Tony Reagins, the team would consider pursuing the superstar third baseman, who opted out of his contract with the Yankees.

The Angels of Anaheim are open to being players in the high-stakes game that will surround the most talented and expensive free agent in baseball history. General Manager Tony Reagins said the Angels would consider pursuing third baseman Alex Rodriguez now that he has opted out of his contract with the New York Yankees. At least one online betting site has the Angels as the favorite to sign Rodriguez, just ahead of the Dodgers and Cubs. “I can't say anything about that but I can say he is a talented ballplayer who would make any team he's on a better ballclub,” said Reagins. “We're going to look at opportunities to improve our club and if we decide those opportunities are out there, we'll go after them hard.”

By opting out of the final three years of his contract with the Yankees, Alex Rodriguez stepped away from a guaranteed $72 million and is likely to seek $25 million to $30 million a year from his new team for the next 7-10 years. Speculation over those figures prompted Angels owner Arte Moreno to comment earlier this year that “there is a ceiling” to what he could afford to pay one player and still field a competitive team.

Arte Moreno has also said he would be concerned about how committing as much as twenty-five percent of the team’s payroll to one player might be “disrespect for the other teammates.”

Moreover, the highest-paid player of Angels of Anaheim is outfielder Vladimir Guerrero. He is scheduled to make $14.5 million in the final year of his contract next season with the Angels holding an option at $15 million for 2009.

According to Tony Reagins, he and Arte Moreno have spoken several times in the two weeks since he succeeded Bill Stoneman, but Reagins said he has been given no payroll ceiling for 2008. “Specific dollars? No,” said Tony Reagins. “Basically, if it makes sense, we'll consider it. That's really the bottom line.”

The Angels out righted outfielder Tommy Murphy and right-hander Marc Gwyn, making them minor-league free agents. In addition to this, outfielder Nick Gorneault was claimed off waivers by the team of Texas Rangers.

The club of Angels of Anaheim will continue to decide on the status of their players and/or roster. The team continues to plan things for their Spring Training and for the upcoming season.
