Angels Not Aware

According to former general manager Bill Stoneman, the Angels of Anaheim was not aware of Paul Byrd’s use of human growth hormone or of his pituitary gland issue, during his one season with the team and even during negotiations for his contract. And though the Indians pitcher said he did not try to hide anything, Stoneman, who was the team’s general manager when Paul Byrd signed a one-year deal with the Angels in December 2004, said Monday that no one in the organization was notified of the condition of Byrd or his need to use the drug. “I can tell you for sure I was not aware, nor am I aware that anyone else here is aware,” Stoneman said by telephone. “I can give you that answer for every player. I've never been made aware that any player has taken this thing.”

Before it was banned by Major League Baseball, Paul Byrd purchased HGH from 2002 to 2005. Byrd’s last purchase of the drug was on the 6th of January 2005, about three weeks after signing with the Angels of Anaheim. He went 12-11 with a 3.74 ERA with the team in 2005, the lowest ERA of his career pitching 60 or more innings in a season. Neither an e-mail nor a phone message to Byrd's agent was returned. “I can tell you categorically I've never been made aware of anybody who's using any of these substances,” said Bill Stoneman. “We never had any reason to suspect him or anybody.”

Paul Byrd acknowledged using HGH, on Sunday, before Game 7 of the ALCS, but said it was only under a doctor's supervision. According to Byrd, “Everything was done out in the open. I have shipments come to clubhouses and actually, for a short period of time, stored them in a refrigerator, so I feel like that makes things very legitimate.”

Furthermore, Jarrod Washburn, who pitched with Byrd on the 2005 Angels team and is now with Seattle, said he did not know anything about Paul Byrd's use of HGH and was very surprised when he heard it. “He's a straight-laced guy, a good family man, an honest guy,” Washburn said Monday. “I don't think he's trying to hide anything from the interview I saw.”

Paul Byrd is now the fourth former or current Angel to be associated with performance-enhancing drugs this year, joining Troy Glaus, Scott Schoeneweis and Gary Matthews Jr. “You never want anybody that's connected to the same club that you're connected with to have a finger pointed at them for something like that,” said Bill Stoneman. “The sooner we clean this stuff out of major league baseball, the better off this business will be and better off the players will be. The sooner we realize we need to go on the straight and narrow, the much better we'd all be.”
Bill Stoneman added, “I would be in favor of whatever it would take to clear this stuff out of our business. Whatever it would take, I'm not going to exclude anything there. It's something we've got to get out of our game.”

True or not, the team of Angels of Anaheim will continue to acquire great players regardless of their personal status and/or personal issues, as long as they are deserving players and follow the rules of Major League Baseball.
