Los Angeles Angels Information
The Angels-represented by fire and ice
It was called fearlessness by John Lackey, who is an All-Star for the first time, which has made a two-time All-Star and one of the game’s best closers. “He came up right out of the gate and wasn't scared,” said Lackey of the 2002 postseason, when he, too, was a rookie feeling his way through the team of Angels’ dramatic and improbable run to a World Series championship. “I knew who he was. I'd played with him in the Minor Leagues. He always had confidence. The bigger the game, the more his competitiveness comes out.” When asked to identify the origin of that ability to thrive in such a demanding position, Rodriguez pauses in thought before returning in his mind to Caracas, Venezuela, where the streets were mean and swallowed up kids like him by the hundreds. “My background, I guess that's where it comes from,” K-Rod said. “The places I grew up, it was difficult. I guess it was good and bad at the same time. I grew up in a tough neighborhood. The stronger survive -- that's how I see it.” He continued, “I've been on the streets since I was 9 years old, working. Once I cross that line, take that mound, I'm in charge. The hitters are going to hit the pitch I want them to hit. That's the mentality I have on the mound. That's how I feel. This is my house, and no one else's.” There is an edge of defiance in his voice, telling that when you've called those South American streets home, you will use every ounce of your being to protect your turf on Major League Baseball pitching mounds. In addition, here for Tuesday's All-Star Game, in the good company of Lackey, the fierce Texan, and Rodriguez, the fiery Venezuelan, is Vladimir Guerrero, from the Dominican Republic and a different brand of personality altogether.
Vladimir Guerrero, who’s easy-going, humble, as gentle in manner as his swing, is hard and destructive, and was smiling freely as he spoke with Hispanic reporters and even tried out his English on a familiar reporter whose forays into Spanish clearly amuse him. “I couldn't imagine a better teammate than Vlad,” said Lackey. “He's an authentic superstar who doesn't act it. He's just having a good time. He'd be at home in the Dominican playing on the streets if he wasn't here -- and he'd be having just as much fun.” He continued, “It would be hard for me to imagine anyone who has a bigger impact on his team than Vlad does. If we were to lose him for any extended period of time, it wouldn't be good for us.” Guerrero, who’s second in the Majors in RBIs with 75, behind Alex Rodriguez, smiled when he was asked, truth or fiction, if he really did lift a ball out of the dirt in Florida while he was with Montreal and launch it out of the Marlins' ballpark. Brad Penny of the Dodgers, who was a Marlins pitcher at the time made that claim earlier in the day. Vlad stated in English, “Truth”. He continued, “I was young then. Strong.”
Vladimir Guerrero’s actions speak volumes. Vlad was the third-leading vote-getter in the fans’ balloting, behind Yankees icons A-Rod and Derek Jeter, which offers an insight into his immense popularity. He drew more votes than Ken Griffey Jr. and Barry Bonds, among others, and it truly appears to amaze and humble him at the same time. “The fans have been so good to me,” Guerrero, a contestant in Monday night's Home Run Derby, said through Angels broadcaster Jose Mota's translation. “I feel very blessed. With all my back issues out of the way, I want to pay back the fans for all they have done for me.” Lackey's first trip to the Midsummer Classic will be complete, if he gets a chance to show his stuff behind AL starter Dan Haren of Oakland. “I think he made the right decision,” Lackey said of AL manager Jim Leyland starting Haren on familiar Bay Area turf. “Haren's been doing it all year. To have a 2.30 ERA in the American League is pretty special.” Lackey is 11-5 with a 2.91 ERA. He started on Saturday, delivering one of the finest performances of his career (no walks, 11 strikeouts) in holding the team of Yankees to one run on three hits in Yankee Stadium. With an inning of perilous but successful relief, to Rodriguez, it was Lackey’s second superb effort in the Bronx this season, but the victory in this 13-inning affair went, Lackey usually throws his between-starts bullpen session on the second day after a start, “so I could throw a couple [innings] if I need to,” he stated, underscoring the importance of winning this game for home-field advantage in the World Series. “It's absolutely something our players think about. I think it's a big deal. It was a big deal for us in '02. We had some things going on in our stadium. It was definitely an advantage to be at home” for Games 6 and 7 of the Series. Lackey got Game 7, a raw rookie, and the team of Angels would not have gotten there without the spectacular work of the phenom, K-Rod, in front of closer Troy Percival. “It's a gift that God gave me,” the man from Venezuela stated, merely.
