Angels add talent remain in first place

Angels of Anaheim has been one of the MLB clubs that have harvested their own talent in a prosperous and consistent approach. The youthful rotation anchors are home-grown John Lackey, Jered Weaver and Ervin Santana. Closer Francisco Rodriguez evolved into a star learning the trade from Troy Percival, just as setup stalwart Scot Shields and middle reliever Chris Bootcheck came up through the ranks, observing the likes of Brendan Donnelly and Ben Weber. Should any of the starters falter or fall prey to injury in the second half, Joe Saunders is waiting in the wings, ready to confidently assume a full-time spot in the rotation. “Organizational depth gives you stability,” said manager Mike Scioscia. “It's really showed itself this season with the injuries we've been able to absorb. Our goal is to have interchangeable parts.” While media and fans have urged the front office to break up the fundamental core of the team for that one big, elusive bat to drop in the heart of the order, the club exercised patience. And here are Willits, Kotchman, Kendrick and Napoli, giving production and emerging as potential stars in the company of Guerrero and Anderson.

Furthermore, each player has bear frustration with injuries this season, but Willits, Kotchman, Kendrick and Napoli figure to be significant elements in the second-half run, which could lead the Angels of Anaheim to exciting places in October. The return of reliever Justin Speier, who did extremely well in the season’s first month, would be a lift to the pitching staff. Dustin Moseley had two outstanding starts to open the season, filling in for Colon, and then performed admirably in Speier’s role. Maicer Izturis played quality third base while Figgins was out for the first month of the season with fractures in the index and middle fingers on his right hand. When Chone struggled in his return, there were cries for the import of a third baseman with power. Figgins promptly became one of the game's hottest hitters, setting a franchise record for hits in a month (53) while joining Willits and Cabrera to form a formidable top of the order.

The team of Angels will continue to force opponents with speed and aggression on the bases, going from first to third on singles, forcing mistakes. They play the game the way Scioscia learned it growing up with the Dodgers, old-school National League approach. The pitching has been excellent, if not quite as dominant as some had envisioned. Neither Colon nor Santana has found a consistent groove, while Weaver has fought through a variety of ailments to deliver solid work in support of twin aces Lackey and Escobar.

There are those who would consign Santana to the Minor Leagues or include him in a deal for a hitter, yet he shows potential matched by few arms in the game. Santana, regardless of his first-half struggles, has won more games at his age (24) than a number of Hall of Famers, including Nolan Ryan. A successful Major League pitcher in his time, general manager Bill Stoneman understands what it takes to be successful in that world, and he’s willing to wait for all of those elements to come together. Scioscia, like the GM, is blessed with uncommon patience, willing to wait for athletes he believes in to prove themselves worthy of his faith and trust.

Though the team of Angels was not considered as a model franchise by overreacting and creating risky moves to appease fans and media, the team have surpassed it their own way, their own style and their own strategies that made them succeed in every task that they are responsible and required to do.
