Angels’ Payroll Usage

The Angels of Anaheim has been busy as the team continues to plan for 2009 season. Until the 14th of November, the team has exclusive negotiating rights to Teixeira and five other free agents namely Garret Anderson, Francisco Rodriguez, Jon Garland, Darren Oliver as well as Juan Rivera. Then other clubs can speak to these players in generalities without exploring contract terms.

Mark Teixeira was traded to the Angels on July of 2008 for Casey Kotchman and pitcher Stephen Marek. He is represented by Scott Boras, who is believed to be seeking a deal of at least six seasons at about $20 million per year. Boras puts Teixeira in the exclusive class of Alex Rodriguez, Barry Bonds, and Manny Ramirez as players who pay for themselves through various revenues they generate.

“We think very highly of Mark and have made him a high priority,” said Tony Reagins, the Angels general manager.

According to Reagins, the team will need offense with regards to the impact of not retaining Teixeira. The club's fallback plan at first base includes Kendry Morales. Morales, a switch hitter and throws right-handed, has been an outstanding player in the past two seasons; however, he has not played regularly at the Major League level.

On the other hand, Francisco Rodriguez, who has played for the Halos from 2002 to 2008, could have a relatively long wait before signing given how many teams are in the market for a closer. If the Angels don't bring K-Rod back, they have in-house options through veteran Scot Shields and Jose Arredondo, who had an impressive rookie season in 2008. According to Reagins, the Angels are interested in acquiring Anderson, Rivera, Garland as well as Oliver. Moreover, the club has a projected $125 million budget and according to owner Arte Moreno, he does not plan to exceed by significant measure the club's $119.2 million payroll entering the 2007 season. The club would trim the 2007 payroll by $40 million, not bringing back Anderson, Garland, Rodriguez, Rivera, Oliver and Kotchman's detached $1.45 million. If Garland does not return, Reagins said he would be comfortable if necessary throwing the fifth starter's job open to competition. Right-handers Dustin Moseley, Nick Adenhart, Shane Loux and Anthony Ortega would be the leading candidates.

The Angels of Anaheim needs to think about the important needs of the team in terms of its players. This offseason is indeed a crucial stage in a team and the Angels need to consider factors that will help the team improve their next season.
