Angels Players for Free Agency

In MLB, a free agent is a team player whose contract with a team has expired, and the player is able to sign a contract with another team if that player is chosen. For the Angels of Anaheim, there are three players who filed for free agency and the filing period runs through the 13th of November. These players include first baseman Mark Teixeira, left fielder Garret Anderson and starting pitcher Jon Garland.

Moreover, middle reliever Darren Oliver, closer Francisco Rodriguez, and outfielder Juan Rivera are also qualified to participate free agency. However, if the team of Angels loses Garland, Oliver and Rodriguez, the organization would need to reconstruct about 25 percent of their pitching staff. Anderson's filing was anticipated after the club announced on Tuesday that it was not picking up his $14 million option for 2009, exercising a $3 million buyout. The team has a 15-day window to negotiate exclusively with Anderson.

On the other hand, the options of right fielder Vladimir Guerrero as well as starter John Lackey were exercised, and they will be back to lead the offense and rotation, respectively, of the American League West champions. Before falling to the Red Sox in four games in the AL Division Series, the Angels produced a Major League-leading and franchise-best 100 wins.

Francisco Rodriguez is poised to take his all-time record 62 saves into free agency. And Mark Teixeira, who was acquired from Atlanta on July 29 at the cost of Casey Kotchman and prospect Steve Marek, is among the premium free agents. At least a half-dozen clubs are expected to explore signing K-Rod and Teixeira to long-term deals.

In the Angels of Anaheim history, Garret Anderson is the most productive offensive player. He batted .293 with 15 home runs and 84 RBIs, second on the club to Guerrero's 91. Anderson is the franchise leader in games played, at-bats, hits, total bases, singles, doubles, grand slams, extra-base hits, career RBI, single-game RBI, and consecutive games (12) with an RBI.

Mark Teixeira batted .358 with 13 homers and 43 RBIs while also flourishing defensively in his 54 games with the Angels. Teixeira hit .358 with 13 home runs and 43 RBI after the trade to help the Angels to their first 100 win season in franchise history. On the other hand, Garland was acquired in exchange for shortstop Orlando Cabrera last winter. The Angels, who had depth at shortstop, liked Garland's durability and he didn't disappoint in 2008; he extended his streak of at least 32 games started to 7 consecutive seasons. Garland was 14-8 with a 4.90 ERA in 32 starts.
