A Proud Manager
10/18/2008
In every team, there’s always been people who support them all the way through and the manager is among those people. Angels manager Mike Scioscia cleaned out his office Wednesday, two days after his club lost in four games to Boston in the American League Division Series. The time off gave the manager time to reflect on his 10th season as the Angels skipper, and he saw the results from this season as kind of a mixed bag due to the unanticipated exit from the playoffs for the third time in five years.
"There's a great feeling of accomplishment of what we did in the regular season," Scioscia said. "I think year after year we've played good baseball to get into the playoffs. At times, we've done well in the playoffs, and recently we haven't done well at all, so there's some reflection at the end of the season to see what you've done and if you're going in the right direction."
However, according to Scioscia, he isn't concerned with the Angels' direction. He feels the team is built for the long haul, and that this would not be their only chance to win their first World Series title since 2002. But he also noted that this one was harder to take than the previous playoff losses because the team had won 100 games and added important pieces such as Mark Teixeira and Torii Hunter to the lineup. "This year is a little harder than those years because we had a deeper team that should have played better," Scioscia said. "One thing we just couldn't get around was opportunities with runners in scoring position. You're talking about a swing of a hit here and there, but we just couldn't get that hit to fall in."
Moreover, Scioscia once again defended his decision to call for a squeeze play during the ninth inning of Game 4 with Erick Aybar at the plate and Reggie Willits at third base. The play did not turn out the way the Angels anticipated, with Aybar missing the bunt on a 2-0 count and Willits getting tagged out while running back to third base. Scioscia said he'd make the same call again. "I feel the same way," Scioscia said. "I think it's a high-percentage play, and unfortunately it didn't work out. There's no second guessing." Now Scioscia has to look to the future and discuss the Angels of Anaheim offseason plans with general manager Tony Reagins and owner Arte Moreno.
In addition to this, the team of the Angels has difficult decisions to make. Because players like Francisco Rodriguez, Jon Garland, Juan Rivera, Darren Oliver and Teixeira are all free agents; while John Lackey, Garret Anderson and Vladimir Guerrero have club options on their contracts. However, Scioscia understands that it will be nearly impossible to keep all of the same players from last season but said he hopes to see many of the same players next year. "I think we like our talent level," Scioscia said. "The challenge Tony Reagins has is to keep some of that talent in that room. As constructed, this is a team that can certainly get to the World Series and win the World Series. It's unfortunate it didn't happen this year for us, but there's good prospects for the future."
The season was a difficult one for the Angels. The team won their fourth division title in five years but they have won just one postseason series in those five years. Scioscia still wanted to let his players know he was happy with their efforts but that he expects more in the postseason. "I'm proud of the way our guys have played and held up since we've been here. I'm proud of the way they go about their job in the regular season," Scioscia said. "I'm proud of the way they've handled themselves in tough times. And I'm extremely disappointed of the last couple go-rounds we had in the playoffs. That's the best way I can put it. But we're going to get better and get there. I'm confident."
The Angels of Anaheim believes that the team can move on, they just need to take a break, know their weaknesses or deficiencies and stand once again to fight for victory.
