2008 Legacy Awards

Over the past years, the Angels of Anaheim has garnered different awards and has proven their worth as a professional football team. The team is well-renowned for having great players and coaching staff as well. In fact, recently, Angels manager Tony Reagins as well as closer Francisco Rodriguez received honors from the 2008 Legacy Awards.

The 2008 Legacy Awards is sponsored by the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in Kansas City. Tony Reagins was named the recipient of the Adrew “Rube” Foster Award as American League Executive of the Year. In addition, Doug Melvin of the Brewers was the choice for the National League

Francisco Rodriguez holds the Major League record for saves in a single season with 62, set in 2008. K-Rod was selected as winner of the Hilton Smith Award, given to the AL's premier reliever. However, Jose Valverde of the Astros was the NL winner.

Reagins made a splash last November, in his first two moves as general manager after succeeding Bill Stoneman after the 2007 season. He sent shortstop Orlando Cabrera to the White Sox for starter Jon Garland and followed it up a week later with the signing of coveted free-agent center fielder Torii Hunter. Both players had major roles in the Angels' run to the best record in the Majors (100-62) and fourth AL West title in five years. With the non-waiver Trade Deadline approaching, Reagins sent first baseman Casey Kotchman and Minor League pitcher Steve Marek to the Braves for slugging first baseman Mark Teixeira, who excelled offensively and defensively. Reagins is only the fourth African-American General Manager of a Major League Baseball club in history. He joined the Angels as an intern in the club's marketing department in 1991, and moved permanently to the team's baseball staff in 1998 as manager of baseball operations. He is a member of the Buck O'Neil Scout Association and an active supporter of Major League Baseball's Urban Youth Academy.

On the other hand, Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols and Twins first baseman Justin Morneau claimed the 2008 Oscar Charleston Legacy Awards as the best players in each league, the museum announced. The awards will be presented in ceremonies at the Gem Theatre in Kansas City, across the street from the Negro Leagues Museum, on the 10th of January. Proceeds from the Ninth Annual Legacy Awards will benefit the institution, which keeps alive the legacy of men and women who played coached or owned teams when baseball was a segregated sport.

The Angels of Anaheim was indeed an outstanding team. The team with Tony Reagins will continue to prove that they deserve the awards and/or honors that they received.
