The Titans is an American football franchise that plays in the NFL. The Titans are currently based in Nashville, Tennessee, and are members of the Southern Division of the American Football Conference.
The Titans were originally known as the Houston Oilers, and was among the eight charter teams of the American Football League back in 1960. The team was owned by the businessman Bud Adams, who made his fortune in the petroleum business. The Oilers were a very dominant team in the early years of the AFL and were led by players such as Billy Cannon, George Blanda, Charlie Hennigan, Charlie Tolar, and Bob Talamin, which led them to their first AFL championship in 1960, against the San Diego Chargers, whom they defeated in a 24-16 contest. The Oilers managed to defend their AFL title the next season, again versus the San Diego Chargers, by way of a 10-3 victory.
The Oilers continued to perform well in the 1962 season. Their efforts culminated in the AFL championships, and were set to face the Dallas Texans. The 1962 AFL Championship game was an action-packed game that went on a double overtime. Despite their best efforts, The AFL championship was taken by the Dallas Texans after the game ended with the score of 20-17. The Oilers would not have another shot for the AFL Championship until 1967. They faced the Oakland Raiders, but were spurned from bringing home the AF championship, after the Raiders dispatched them in a 40-7 contest.
After the AFL-NFL merger of 1970, the Oilers struggled in the first four seasons, often finishing on the last spot of the AFC Central Division. The team would rise from their slump in 1974, led by Coach Sid Gilman, who guided them to a 7-7 finish, which was a marked improvement from the previous four seasons. Head coach duties would be taken over by Bum Phillips the next season, and was accompanied by talented players in the person of Elvin Bethea and Billy Johnson. The Oilers then managed to post a winning season, having a win-loss record of 10-4.
In 1978, The Oilers had a shot for the conference championship, where they faced the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Steelers thwarted their efforts after dispatching them in a 34-5 contest. The next year, The Oilers again managed to advance to the conference finals, but were again defeated by the Steelers in a 27-13 contest.
The Oilers would eventually move to Tennessee in 1997, and change their name to the Titans in 1999. Their first season as the Titans was a very successful one. Football fans with Titans tickets saw their favorite team take the Conference Championship against the Jacksonville Jaguars, whom they dispatched in a 33-14 contest. The 34th Super Bowl was an action-packed contest that that kept fans standing from their seats, as the game ended on a heart-breaking defeat of the Titans, when they were Titans wide receiver Kevin Dyson was tackled one yard short from the goal line by Mike Jones of the Rams, effectively ending the game 23-16 in favor of the Rams.
The Tennessee Titans again had a successful run in 2000. The Titans bagged the division title, but bowed out in the playoffs against the Baltimore Ravens in a 24-10 contest. The Titans finished the 2000 season with a record of 13-3, much to the delight of fans with Titans tickets .
In 2002, The Titans again took the Division title, and went on to contend for the Conference championships. The rebuilding process for the Tennessee Titans continued in 2005 as the once mighty franchise went 4-12 with a group of young players, but should be more competitive this season as the NFL draft brought college stars QB Vince Young (Texas), and powerful runner Lendale White (USC).Longtime veteran Quarterback Steve McNair was traded to the Baltimore Ravens, making the roster overhaul complete, and ushering in a new era of Tennessee Titan football. The defense will be the strength and backbone of the team especially with the offense incorporating new faces, and must keep the Tennessee Titans in games due to the fact division rivals such as the Indianapolis Colts. Houston Texans, and Jacksonville Jaguars feature great passers.
Defensive line will be a source of strength for the Tennessee Titans with massive DT Albert Haynesworth leading the way, he commands a double-team block on each and every play which will free up edge rusher DE Kyle Vanden Bosch to attack against one blocker, DT Randy Starks and DE Travis LaBoy round out a starting unit that should be excellent with rookie DT Jesse Mahelona (University of Tennessee) adding depth. At linebacker pro bowl OLB Keith Bullock will be the centerpiece of a group that has speed and cover ability but may be a bit undersized when encountering physical run games, OLB David Thornton was acquired in March from the Indianapolis Colts and will be a major upgrade as he possesses good speed and a nose for the ball, which will make this unit better against the run and pass. Second-year man CB "Pac Man" Jones will a secondary that’s short on experience but long on talent, Jones has blazing speed which allows him to go for the ball and still have the ability to recover if need be, FS Chris Hope was obtained from the Super Bowl Champion Pittsburgh Steelers and will significantly upgrade coverage as well as supporting the run, CB Reynaldo Hill is another opportunistic ball hawk who could cause enemy passers problems.
The wide receiver position was strengthen by the acquisition of David Givens from the New England Patriots who gives the Tennessee Titans a good all around player who cant do a little of everything, WR Drew Bennett has developed into one of the better pass catchers in the league with his hardnosed style and tremendous hands, Tyrone Calico is a superb third receiver who could be a first stringer on some squads, tight end Ben Troupe is one of the best at his position in the league and should excel as he is only getting better. The offensive line is very strong in the middle with multiple pro bowler OG Benji Olson being the anchor and all-pro C Kven Mawae lending support, OG Zach Piller is a sturdy veteran who gives his all on each snap, the tackle spot has the staff concerned as Michael Roos and David Stewart have only four years of playing experience between and must handle outstanding speed rushers within the division twice a year which could make whomever the signal caller for the Tennessee Titans is very uneasy. If he can stay healthy RB Chris Brown can be one of the best all around backs in the NFL, as he can be a slashing runner with good speed and a receiver out of the backfield that most linebackers cannot handle, rookie RB LenDale White could someday soon be the feature runner with his bruising style and underrated speed, White has a chance to be the equivalent of former Pittsburgh Steelers all-pro Jerome Bettis, this unit could be lights out if that happens.
As of now with Steve McNair gone, Billy Volek would be the starter at quarterback and has proven that he is more than capable of putting of big numbers and leading the team to victory, but the Tennessee Titans drafted QB Vince Young to be their passer of the future and that day may come this season if Volek shows any signs of struggling, Young has it all speed, size, arm strength, and a huge heart someday soon he will be viewed as one of the elite signal callers in the league. Rob Bironas will be the place-kicker and longtime Tennessee Titan Craig Hentrich will handle the punting duties will make the special teams solid. It will be difficult for the Tennessee Titans to finish higher than third in the AFC South as the Indianapolis Colts and Jacksonville Jaguars won 14 and 12 games respectively and will be two of the NFL's best so look for 5-7 wins and gradual improvement.....Great moment in team history, its simply called the "music city miracle", on January 8th ,2000 the Tennessee Titans trailed the Buffalo Bills 19-16 in an AFC divisional playoff game and only 16 seconds remained and were receiving the kickoff, TE Frank Wychek took the kickoff ran right and lateral across the field to WR Kevin Dyson who followed a wall blockers 75 yards to give the Tennessee Titans a miracle 22-16 victory.
