Home is where the heart is. This famous line will follow the SWARCO Raiders in the remaining weeks of the 2008 season. Due to regulations set by the European Soccer Federation, UEFA, for the upcoming European Soccer Championships the SWARCO Raiders will call the city of Wattens their new home. The EURO 2008 starts in June, allowing no games to be played in host stadiums from now on until the tournament kicks off.

The SWARCO Raiders, marketing teammate of the NFL’s Oakland Raiders, now play their home games at Alpenstadion Wattens. And the very first football game played at the 5,000-seat arena was a clash of two Austrian titans. This past Saturday, the SWARCO Raiders hosted the previously unbeaten Turek Graz Giants.

The Raiders though found a way to put a "1" in the Giants’ loss column, beating Graz by a convincing score of 42-24. By winning its premiere at Alpenstadion the Raiders have taken over first place in the Austrian Football League (AFL) standings.

“Today the team has not only made me very proud, it made the whole club extremely proud,” said head coach Geoff Buffum. “The team stuck to our game plan and the win was a product of practicing and preparing well for this special game.”

Quarterback Marko Glavic completed 21 of 29 passes for 255 Yards. He threw three touchdown passes and no interception. Catching a 40-yard touchdown pass from Glavic with a broken hand, wide receiver Andreas Pröller opened the scoring. Wideout Jakob Dieplinger caught the other two scores.

Florian Grein also had a major impact against Graz as he ran for three touchdowns, 83 yards and kept several drives alive with his rushes on third downs. Grein was named the game’s MVP for his performance.

The special teams also played a big role in the win as well as the defense, which was able to stop Graz’ dangerous offense every time it mattered. The defense also intercepted one pass and blocked a field goal.

In beating the Giants, the SWARCO Raiders moved right by their rival into first place in the AFL standings with a 3-1 record. Graz sits in second place (3-1), followed by the Danube Dragons (2-1) and the Dodge Vikings (2-2). The Cineplexx Blue Devils (1-2) sit in fifth place with the Carinthian Black Lions (0-3) being last. Next Sunday the SWARCO Raiders will be on the road to face the Black Lions at Klagenfurt. Kickoff is 6 a.m. PT (3 p.m. CET).

The action on the field is not the only reason SWARCO Raiders fans come to the games. The Raiders are well-known for their show before and during the games. The SWARCO Raiders became the first team in AFL history to present a gigantic team-colored helmet. The cheerleaders and the team entered Alpenstadion through the giant inflatable, accompanied by fireworks.

Another highlight was a raffle by the Raiders’ main sponsor and gameday host SWARCO. The company gave away a driving safety practice and two SWARCO packages including a crystal trophy.

One day later the SWARCO Raiders’ second team also hosted the Graz Giants. And they did even better than the Raiders’ major league team, beating the Giants 49-0. The second team remains unbeaten after four games.

After a slow start the Raiders offense exploded in the second period, scoring five touchdowns to take the lead for good. The 18-year-old wide receiver Christian Willi opened the scoring. Quarterback Damaso Tarneller (18), running back Daniel Schuster (21), wide receiver Julian Ebner (17), and running back Nico Lechner (17) also scored. In the fourth quarter, wide receiver Christian Winkler and running back Gram Magnus put some more points on the scoreboard.
