Baltimore Ravens was formed in the year 1995 when the Cleveland Browns proclaimed their intention to move to Baltimore for the 1996 season. Surveys, fan contests, and focus groups were formed to help choose the appropriate team name for the franchise. Ravens was selected in honor of Edgar Allan Poe, who wrote the famous poem, The Raven, while living in Baltimore. During the first season of Baltimore Ravens, the team was coached by Coach Ted Marchibroda, who led the team in winning against the Oakland Raiders in September 1 with a score of 19-14. The success of the Baltimore Ravens started in the season of 2000. With a record of 12-4, the Baltimore Ravens were able to reach and win the Wild Card Playoffs with 21-3 against the Denver Broncos. The Ravens won the Divisional Playoffs over the Tennessee Titans with 24-10. As the Ravens advanced to the Conference Championship, the team faced the Oakland Raiders and defeated them by 16-3. The Ravens successfully reached their first Super Bowl season. During the Super Bowl XXXV, the Ravens encountered the New York Giants. During the first half, the Ravens’ defense was strong, holding a 10-10 lead. . Late in the 3rd Quarter the Ravens defense scored again, as Duane Starks returned an interception 47 yards for a TD. However, on the ensuing kickoff the Giants would get on the board as Ron Dixon returned the kickoff 97 yards for a TD to get the Giants back into the game at 17-7. However, the Ravens would respond in the blink of an eye as Jermaine Lewis returned a kickoff of his own 84 yards to give the Ravens a 24-7 lead. In total, a record 3 consecutive returns for touchdowns were made as fans got whiplash in the most exciting 36 seconds in Super Bowl history. The Ravens would go on to score 10 points in the 4th Quarter for an impressive 34-7 victory, as Ray Lewis was named Super Bowl Most Valuable Player.
In 2001, the team of Ravens still had a winning record of 10 wins and 6 losses. The team again won the Wild Card Playoffs with 20-3 over the Miami Dolphins. Baltimore Ravens had a chance to enter the 2001 Divisional Playoffs, but lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers by 27-10. The success of the team continued in 2003; the Ravens finished first place in the American Football Conference North with a score of 20-17. During the 2006 season, however, the Baltimore Ravens reached again the first place with 13-3, but unfortunately lost to the Indianapolis Colts during the 2006 Divisional Playoffs.
