After qualifying for the postseason in four of the previous five seasons the St. Louis Rams finished with a 6-10 record, a performance that prompted the front office to replace head coach Mike Martz with upcoming Scott Linehan who was the offensive coordinator for the Miami Dolphins last year. Injuries were also a major problem for the Rams as quarterback Marc Bulger was sidelined for nearly half the season and soon to be hall-of-famer RB Marshall Faulk was limited due to knee problems and age, but the biggest problem for the St.Louis Rams was defense as they were unable to stop anyone, especially running the ball and ranked in the bottom five in total defense.
The offense is still one of the most dangerous and high octane units in the NFL and should continue to move the ball at will against most foes. Defensive line is a position that the St.Louis Rams have invested a lot of high round draft picks at, DT Jimmy Kennedy appears to be headed in the right direction and can control the middle of the line, but others like DT Ryan Pickett must step up their game for the Rams to compete, the talent is there, DE Leonard Little is one of the best pass rushers in the league and newly acquired DT Laroi Glover has been to multiple pro bowls so this unit could be very good if everyone plays up to their capabilities, at linebacker are a bit undersized and can be pushed around by a big physical run blocking line, but they do have great speed with OLB Piso Tinoisamoa being the best of the bunch, he can run sideline-to-sideline and make plays, off-season acquisition Will Witherespoon will add talent to this group as he was an excellent all around linebacker for the Carolina Panthers, Brandon Chillar is another LB with above average speed and has a great nose for the ball, this unit needs the d-line to dominate which will allow them to run to the ball without taking on blockers.
The secondary is also a sore spot for the St.Louis Rams as they are a bit short and undersized, although obtaining S Corey Chavous was a big move as he has great timing and will level receivers and ball carriers, second year man CB Ronald Bartell has blazing speed and the physical tools to be a great cover man all he knees to do is receive playing time and work on his technique, at left cornerback DeJuan Groce has some ability and will always play hard and smart, this is a position the St.Louis Rams will certainly address in the upcoming NFL draft. On offense the Rams still have many of the playmakers that once made this group the "greatest show on turf", OT Orland Pace is still one of the best offensive linemen in game today as he is nearly impossible to get around in the passing game, at the other tackle is Alex Barron who will be entering his second year and has pro bowl potential, by the end of last season he was becoming a force, G Adam Timmerman is one of the steadiest players in the NFL and will play at a high level but the wildcard of this unit is G-C Rich Incognito who as a rookie last season did nit play due to injury but has tremendous power and a mean streak and could be an all pro type in due time he is a earthmover which would make this group go from being very good to elite if plays up to his potential. Marc Bulger when healthy is a pro bowl player with his terrific accuracy and poise in the pocket and should have the offense humming, the receivers are still some of the best in the game as Torry Holt made the pro bowl for the fourth consecutive year, catching 103 passes for 1,331 yards and nine touchdowns remains one of the top five pass catchers in the game, Isaac Bruce is getting up their in years but still is one of the best route runners ever seen in the NFL, with young speedsters Kevin Curtis and Shaun McDonald the St.Louis Rams have the weapons to trouble even the best secondary, tight end Brandon Manumaleuna is a 300 pounder with soft hands and is a great blocker in the run game.
Running back is a major strength for the St.Louis Rams with bullish Steven Jackson who rushed for 1,046 yards despite missing time with injuries and the great Marshall Faulk who still is one of the shiftiest runners in the league and a mismatch in the passing game against LB'S, the kicking will be solid once again as PK Jeff Wilkins is one of the most accurate kickers in the league, especially inside 50 yards, the special teams for the St.Louis Rams msu improve as they were atrocious last season and probably cost the Rams a game or two, in the final analysis the St.Louis Rams have the talent and potential to bounce back and be a playoff team but the defense is still a huge question mark, so look for the Rams to win between eight and eleven games and if the defense plays just adequately the St.Louis Rams could be very difficult to handle....Great Moment in team history.....After finishing last in the NFC West in 1998 the St.Louis Rams go from worst to first in 1999 as RB Marshall Faulk and NFL and Super Bowl MVP Kurt Warner dominate the entire as the St.Louis have one of the best offensive performances ever and power the St.Louis to the Super Bowl were they defeat the Tennessee Titans 23-16 to capture their first Lombardi Trophy.
