Culpepper remembers winning days at Vanguard

Daunte Culpepper, who’s joined the Minnesota Vikings for his first career days in NFL, and has also been a three-time Pro Bowl quarterback, has seen his share of setbacks in recent years, from a severe knee injury that ended his tenure in Minneapolis, to an aborted comeback attempt with the Miami Dolphins that ended contentiously this summer, to the passing of his adoptive mother, Emma Culpepper, during the most-recent off-season. But afforded a new life in the form of a one-year deal with the Oakland Raiders, Culpepper's excellent preseason has given him a strong case to start the team's opener Sunday against the Detroit Lions. ’I've been working hard,” Daunte Culpepper said. “I am learning everything that I can (about the offense) and it has been a great experience. I am getting more and more comfortable each day.”

First-year Raiders coach Lane Kiffin has not decided whether or not Daunte Culpepper or Josh McCown will start the team’s opener Sunday, according to a report in the Detroit Free Press. His high school coach and mentor, Alex Castaneda, will be on hand in Oakland on Sunday to provide support, whether Culpepper starts or not. Castaneda has meant a great to deal to Culpepper, both on and off the field. ”It's huge to have someone care about you past football,” Culpepper stated. “He is someone who always pushed me to do the right thing. He took me when I was a snotty nosed kid as a freshman in high school and helped mold me into the person I am today and he always taught me to do the right thing.”

Daunte Culpepper led Vanguard to the Class 5A state championship game against Bradenton Southeast, by1994, which was quarterbacked by future NFL receiver Peter Warrick The Knights trailed 19-0 at halftime against the defending state champion Seminoles, but close to within two points late, before falling after a missed 24-yard field goal in the final seconds. “We showed Southeast what we were made of,” said Culpepper. “If we didn't have their respect before the game, we had it afterwards. (Warrick) still talks about that game and he told me 'you all won that one, we just got the trophy.”

Moreover, Daunte Culpepper threw for 170 yards and rushed for 70 more in the 5A finals, compared to a 98 yards passing and 68 for Peter Warrick, whose team started off the season ranked No. 1 in the nation by USA Today. The 1994 Vanguard team was a close-knit group, something which made an impact on Culpepper. “I think the main thing that I took with me from high school to college and then to the pros was that feeling of camaraderie” Daunte Culpepper stated. “Knowing that guy next to you has your back is a great feeling. You’re not playing for yourself, you're playing for that guy next to you.”

Daunte Culpepper passed for 6,107 yards and 57 touchdowns from 1992-94 at Vanguard. At the time of his graduation, he was Marion County's all-time career passing leader, passing former Vanguard and Eastern Kentucky star Ronnie Jones, who threw for 5,255 yards from 1987-89. Former West Port quarterback Bobby Kissane exceeded Culpepper's career yardage mark in 2003 and still sits atop the Marion County charts with 7,354 career yards. In addition, Culpepper's best season with the Knights came in '94, when he threw for 3,122 yards and 33 touchdowns on his way to claiming Mr. Florida Football honors.

Daunte Culpepper was installed as the team's immediate starter, after signing with Central Florida, and completed the first 12 passes of his first career start in a 1995 UCF victory over Eastern Kentucky. Culpepper, who wound up a Heisman Trophy finalist and broke Steve Young's single-season accuracy records, helped UCF usher in its move to the NCAA Division I-A ranks with a string of impressive road outings from 1995-97. The Golden Knights finished 9-2 in his senior season of 1998, losing only at Purdue and Auburn. The following spring, Culpepper was drafted 11th by the Minnesota Vikings in the first round of th NFL draft. He compiled a 26-9 record as a starter, good for a 74.2 winning percentage, compared to Vanguard's181-171-2 record (51.1 percent) in its other 34 years of history, while at Vanguard. He also holds two more impressive Vanguard records.

Another highlight came against rival Forest in the '94 regular season finale. Daunte Culpepper put on a clinic of passing accuracy, completing a remarkable 18-of-20 passes. But he insists it was the team dynamic - not individual accomplishments; that he took away from his Vanguard career. ”It was a great feeling to reach the state championship game with a group of guys who were like my brothers,” said Culpepper. “We had a great year and we accomplished a lot. Before (1994), Vanguard had never won a playoff game and we became the first team from the school to win one and make it to the state championship game. We had a lot of memorable moments.”
