Team Begins its Roster Cuts

In every team and in every season, they always undergo changes for the team and for each player. As the Oakland Raiders began theirs on a Sunday, they released seven players getting a jump on reducing their roster to the league-mandated limit of 75 by Tuesday. Not any of the players who were cut had expected to make the opening-day roster. The surprises will come Saturday as Coach Lane Kiffin decreases the roster to 53.

The team cut wide receivers Lauren Williams and Rich Parson, offensive linemen Albert Toeaina and Torrin Tucker, defensive tackle Jared Clauss and defensive backs Colin Branch and Levonne Rowan, Sunday. However, three more players need to go before the Raiders team reaches 75. Rookie running back Michael Bush and rookie quarterback JaMarcus Russell do not count against the roster. Michael Bush with leg injury is on the physically unable-to-perform list and Russell still hasn't signed a contract. Meanwhile, Lane Kiffin faces a tough call on what to do with Bush in the coming days. The player has not practiced with teammates since he was selected in the fourth round of the NFL draft in April. He has been working with a trainer to rehabilitate a broken right leg suffered in his first game for Louisville last September. “I have no idea at all,” said Michael Bush, when asked about his future. The Oakland Raiders need to decide by Saturday afternoon whether to leave Bush on the list, activate him to the 53-man roster or place the running back on injured reserve. Kiffin said the physically unable-to-perform list seems like a logical option.

Michael Bush would be ineligible to play for the Raiders this season if placed on injured reserve. If he remains on the PUP list, the Raiders can activate him seven weeks into the season. If he isn't activated by the Tuesday after the 10th week, he has to be released or placed on injured reserve. “I've been out, going on 12 months,” Bush said. “Basically, I feel good. They watch me run every day. It's a waiting game. They can tell I've been busting my tail.” Kiffin stated he won't announce a starting quarterback for Thursday's exhibition until today, at the earliest; that doesn't mean he hasn't already decided for the game - or for the Sept. 9 season opener against the Detroit Lions. “There's two benefits,” siad Kiffin of waiting. “One, you kept the competition going this whole time and that's how you get the best out of your players.” He added that by waiting he is forcing Detroit to create three defensive game plans to prepare for whoever might start.

Meanwhile, Safety Hiram Eugene returned to practice for the first time since he injured his hand against the 49ers on Aug. 18. Furthermore, Center Jeremy Newberry (knees), tight end O.J. Santiago (hamstring), receiver Johnnie Lee Higgins (abdomen) and safety Donovin Darius (calf) did not practice.
