Kiffin as a play-caller in Raiders' win

Oakland Raiders head coach Lane Kiffin was thinking the other day on how his job as a play, caller has changed. Life in the coaches’ box at USC was like a 15-year-old playing Madden '07, wheeling and dealing on his PlayStation. The Raiders scored 12 touchdowns in 16 games last season. Meanwhile, the Trojans, physically superior across the board, considered it a major slump if they scored 12 touchdowns in 16 quarters. “I think it changes a little bit because you're not ahead by 40 every game,” Lane Kiffin stated. “It was a little bit easier. We went for it on every fourth down we had. We didn't kick a field goal outside the 25. It's different as far as that. You have to manage the game.” We got a sneak preview of Lane Kiffin as an NFL play-caller in the game on Friday night that led the team of Oakland Raiders to a 20-10 victory against the St. Louis Rams at McAfee Coliseum. Quarterbacks were given a package of plays that best displayed their skills, in the first two preseason games.

The Raiders put together a game plan specifically for St. Louis Rams, this week. Lane Kiffin and offensive coordinator Greg Knapp put together the game plan and the call sheet, with Knapp serving as the press box eyes and Kiffin providing the sequence from the sideline. Ideas vary with regard to preseason football. Some coaches treat their game plans like they would an expensive bottle of wine, saving the good stuff for September and breaking out the Two Buck Chuck in August. Show them nothing and give them even less. Laugh at the thought of the other team's coaches gulping coffee trying to stay awake during film sessions the following week. The other extreme is to empty the playbook, run a few trick plays, go for it on fourth down, attack through myriad formations and make them wonder what you might do next. Show so much they will be transfixed by the game tape, trying to figure out the difference between reality and imagination when the regular season begins.

The Seattle Seahawks came to town for their final preseason tune-up against the Raiders, back in year 2000. The team of Seattle played it vanilla and stayed close to the vest. Jon Gruden never had his offense line up the same way twice on the first few series' of the game. When it was over, and the Oakland Raiders had won 20-0, Mike Holmgren was so furious he walked right past Gruden, his former assistant, without so much as a handshake. Lane Kiffin was closer to the Gruden end of the scale. He did not show all his cards, but was unafraid to push his chips to the middle of the table now and then. He was splitting runs and passes fairly evenly on first down until the Raiders went into a clock-killing mode late in the game. There were signs that Lane Kiffin will satisfy Al Davis’ lust for all things vertical. On Raidrs’ first snap from center, Daunte Culpepper looked for tight end Zach Miller down the middle of the field and started the Raiders off with a 28-yard gain. Pass interference would be the Oakland’s best friend, as trailing St. Louis defenders where whistled five times for 127 yards for fouling Raiders receivers. In addition, Cornerback Tye Hill had three of them for 78 yards. “I really like this NFL rule, with the ball going to the spot,” said Lane Kiffin. “In college it's only 15 yards.”

The team of Kiffin went for first downs on fourth down six times and converted four of them. Johnnie Lee Higgins ran a pair of reverses, one for a 19-yard gain and one for a four-yard loss. The team used a lot of I--formation and also single back sets. Receivers traded off in the slot. One wrinkle found Miller lining up as a fullback with Zack Crockett going to tight end. “There's still stuff in our back pocket that's not out there yet,” said Josh McCown. “I think he'll be aggressive. You see him going for it on fourth down, and that shows a lot of faith and gets you amped up.”

Moreover, as much as Kiffin has worked at reprogramming Daunte Culpepper to check down when the long ball is not there and throw the ball away rather than force one into a tight spot, he's also carried some of his USC mentality with him. “He's the kind of coach that always stresses that we've got to work our technique,” said Culpepper. “It's not about the other team, it's about what we do. If we do things right, it's hard for teams to beat us.”

Last season, the problem with the Tom Walsh offense had as much to do with poor execution as X's and O's, and running back LaMont Jordan said Lane Kiffin's plays will only be as good as the players who are executing them. Furthermore, there were few things more difficult to watch than the Oakland Raiders attempting to run a screen pass last season. On Friday night, Jordan took one from McCown and ran 49 yards for Oakland's longest play from scrimmage, getting blocks from Cooper Carlisle, Cornell Green and Robert Gallery. Still, two turnovers and four sacks left a sour taste in Lane Kiffin’s mouth Friday night. “On offense, we weren't very good today,” said Lane Kiffin. “That's no secret. We turned the ball over and didn't protect the quarterback. We left a lot of points out there.”

There is still the matter of selecting a starting quarterback and signing another one, but it appears the play-calling is in good hands. Lane Kiffin knows exactly how he’d plan things for his team. After all, he is the man who is a part of one of the most outstanding teams in NFL.
